That was the laurel that Wall Street Journal best-selling drinks author and bourbon baron Fred Minnick gave to Foursquare Rum in 2017, and in the years since this legendary distiller — a three-time winner of Producer of the Year at the International Spirits Challenge — has only added to its luster. An acknowledged industry leader, it has become a driving force in the premium craft rum explosion, with each new release sending collectors around the globe scouring the web for available bottles. A blend of three rums, all 12 years of age, and bottled at 124 proof, it is one of the most prized possessions in the world of aged spirits, and we are beyond thrilled to make it available today to our Concierge Family.
Though rum is sometimes dogged by an outmoded reputation as being sweet and not complex, true sophisticates know otherwise. In the purest expressions of rum, there is no manipulation of any kind in the process, and no additives or coloring are ever employed. And should these expressions be brought to maturity, and blended by an expert craftsman like Foursquare's Master Distiller and Blender Richard Seale, they are as magically complex as any spirits in the world.
Seale's roots run deep in Barbados — the Seales can trace their line back to the 1650s — and his knowledge of rum and rum history is unparalleled in the industry. In this limited series, we find him operating at the highest level of his craft. This is a single blended rum, made with both artisanal pot and traditional twin column coffey distilled molasses rums. Three rums in total are employed to produce it, all of them 12 years of age: a single maturation, aged in ex-bourbon barrels; a double maturation, aged 3 years in ex-bourbon barrels and then 9 years in ex-oloroso sherry casks; and a double maturation, aged 10 years in ex-bourbon barrels and then 2 years in ex-oloroso sherry casks.
Because they are matured in the tropical climate of Barbados, the rums undergo a process that the industry terms "tropical ageing." Essentially, a single year in a still in the tropics is akin to two years in a barrel in a more temperate clime. That means that this blend of 12-year rums is going to have the depth, complexity, and smoothness of a 24 year-old rum.
Seale has crafted many an exceptional bottle in his time, but with this Private Cask Selection Master Series he has not just dazzled palates; he has opened eyes.
