FONTODI

TUSCANY, ITALY 2019

Want a sure-fire route to getting your hands on some flat-out fantastic wines?

Identify the producers of perfection, let's call them — those elite estates who have reached that rarefied club of putting out a 100-point bottle of wine — and buy up everything they have.

Seriously.

That's not to say every bottle will be perfection — 100-point earners don't happen along every year — but you can be absolutely certain of this: It will be crafted with exquisite and uncommon care, and it will speak deeply of place.

That's one reason we're so excited to bring you this marvelous trio of wines from Fontodi, the iconic Tuscan estate revered for its Flaccianello, the 2016 vintage of which earned perfect, 100-point scores from both Robert Parker's Wine Advocate and Vinous.

The three we have today, all from 2019 — their Vigna del Sorbo Gran Selezione, their Chianti Classico, and their Chianti Classico Filetta di Lamole — are delicious testament to the precision and soulfulness of one of Italy's greatest estates.

Much of the greatness of Fontodi is foundational; its wines are the literal fruit of superior, high-elevation Galestro soil, the building block of the wines of Chianti Classico.

In its 97-point review of the Vigna del Sorbo Gran Selezione, Decanter singled out that terroir for special commendation. "All the wild, penetrating characteristics" of the Fontodi vineyard are in evidence in the 2019 vintage, Michaela Morris wrote. She called it a wine of “balance and precision,” in which “wood-driven top notes of smoke and vanilla meld into pressed violets, rosemary and liquorice. Luscious red cherry and dark plum flesh are wrapped in long, layered chalky tannins. Across the palate there's an energetic beam of unwavering acidity, giving the wine a linear feel. The finish reverberates with fennel and crushed stone."

If the Vigna del Sorbo needs a few more years, the Chianti Classico is ready for drinking now. It's a wine to keep close at hand for pasta nights or long afternoon lunches by the grill. Wine Spectator, in a 93-point review, called it "succulent" and "firmly built," with "energy and a persistence that extends the fruit, tobacco and mineral elements on the finish."

Not least, we have the Chianti Classico Filetta di Lamole, a pure expression of Sangiovese that Decanter awarded 92 points, hailing its “excellent precision,” “energetic core,” and “fine-boned yet well-structured palate.” Aged for two years in a mixture of French oak casks, it drinks uncannily like a Pinot Noir — with fine, elegant tannins, great definition, and a persistent nose and palate of bright dark cherry. With another year or two of maturation, we expect it to reveal even more complexity and charm.

Three different wines, three different drinking windows ... but also: three expressions of a great estate and a great terroir.

Nab these now, folks; Chiantis don't last long around here, and these are as good as it gets.
