We’re starting 2020 with a (double) 100-point bang! Fontodi is the benchmark producer within Tuscany, and under proprietor Giovanni Manetti, the wines somehow continue to reach new levels of magnificence. The ethereal 100% Sangiovese Flaccianello della Pieve is on the shortlist of the most sought-after and collectible Italian wines, and we are thrilled to have the opportunity to offer our new allocation to you first! 2016 was a fairy tale vintage, with nearly perfect growing conditions that contributed to a great selection of top-quality bottles from many producers, but Fontodi remains in a category all its own. The 2016 Flaccianello presents full-throttle intensity and depth of flavor that is wrapped into an endlessly elegant wine—this wine is absolutely glorious. While Flaccianello is of course an entirely different style of wine, the complexity, precision, and singularity we appreciate in this wine could be compared to Burgundy’s top crus.

While the 2016 Flaccianello is a must-have for serious Italian-focused cellars, I would argue that truly great producers (as I believe Fontodi is) should be judged on their entry label as much as on the prized top labels. The 2016 Fontodi Chianti Classico is an outrageous value at sub-$40, and stays true to the superb quality we’ve come to expect from Manetti’s wines. Layered and elegant, the wine presents powerful aromas and flavors of dark berry, lavender, and cinnamon, and “may very well become the new benchmark for Fontodi's Chianti Classico” (Vinous).

Manetti was appointed in 2018 as the new chairman of the Consorzio Vino Chianti Classico, a role focused on improving global positioning of Chianti Classico wines; he is the 14th person to hold the title since 1924. During his tenure thus far, he has been focusing on a new labeling program called “zonazione”; if approved, Chianti Classico labels would include the name of the village or district from which the grapes were sourced. Though the region has centuries of history of wine production, the commitment to continually improve their art is great news for us consumers: it means the wines will keep getting better and better. As Antonio Galloni aptly puts it: “I can’t remember the last time I was this excited about Chianti Classico and its wines.”
