FEUDI DI SAN GREGORIO

CAMPANIA, ITALY

We know you love your old-vine wines. Now, how about estate-bottled, high-elevation, old-vine wines? And from one of Italy's most respected producers – the winery the Old Vine Conference hailed as a "leader in the Italian old vine movement"?

If Feudi di San Gregorio is not yet on your map, you're in for a discovery.

Come with me to the lush and rolling hills of Sorbo Serpico, an hour east of Naples, where Feudi di San Gregorio has been making some of the finest wines in southern Italy this century – all produced in the shadow (and the incomparably rich volcanic soil) of Mt. Vesuvius, all from protected indigenous grapes (some of which reach back more than 150 years, to the pre-phylloxera era), and all estate-bottled.

We recently explored the stellar Feudi di San Gregorio portfolio, and are thrilled, today, to be able to bring you four of their finest – superlative values all: the 93-point Taurasi 2017; the the Fiano di Avellino 2022; the 92-point Serpico 2016; and the flagship 97-point Pàtrimo 2015.

A deep love of the land might not be a necessity in winemaking, and it's certainly not something you can taste. But you absolutely can detect it. And I dare say that anyone who tries these wines for the first time will not fail to miss the care, thought, and deliberation that has gone into them – and that gives them the character, depth, and soul of wines that cost two and three times as much.

Aglianico is at the heart of the Capaldo mission, and the Taurasi 2017 is a fitting showcase. James Suckling, in his 93-point rave, called it "elegant and refined, " with "firm, fruit-coated tannins that remain vivid rather than chewy" and a "long, fresh finish."

The Wine Advocate was similarly taken with the Pàtrimo 2015, a charismatic red it declared a "proud protagonist of Vino Italiano.” Monica Larner adds: “The 2015 Pàtrimo is a unique expression of Merlot that merits special attention in this excellent vintage. This is one of the finest editions ever produced, and I say that based on the extreme richness, complexity and finesse that unwraps before your eyes and taste buds."
