FETTERCAIRN 24 & 28 YEAR
SINGLE MALT SCOTCH WHISKY
HIGHLANDS, SCOTLAND
Why Buy: Rarity and maturity converge in these exceptional Highland expressions: just 500 bottles of each have reached U.S. shores, and they come bearing massive age statements (28 and 24 years). Last year Fettercairn commemorated its 200th anniversary, and these single malts are fitting celebrations of the distillery's fruit-forward, tropical house style — rendered, as usual, with their customary balance and clarity. At least part of that clarity, we should note, comes from the distillery's copper cooling ring, which makes for one of the most unique distillations in all of whisky, cascading mountain water down the stills and giving these single malts their distinctive purity.
Our Tasting Notes: The 24 Year serves up a richly aromatic display of tropical fruits, followed by a slowly unfurling spread of enhancing notes, from Madagascar vanilla to toffee to fresh pastry. On the palate, notes of guava and Alfonso mangoes mix and mingle with warm honey and red licorice, leading to a sophisticated finish that takes you from subtle red berry fruits and star anise to gentle roasted coffee and nutmeg. Its older sibling, the 28 Year offers an equally compelling but also distinctly different experience. The nose opens with a burst of pineapple and melon, giving way eventually to treacle and banana, and, on the back end, warm ginger and licorice. The palate is rich and defined, with notes of citrus peel and black pepper, all tempered beautifully by walnuts, vanilla, and spices. The finish is long and controlled, and brings with it an abundance of flavor and nuance, including coffee, apricot, and a touch of sweet balsamic.
The Story: Established in 1824, in the foothills of the Cairngorm mountains, Fettercairn has aimed to, as they say, "balance nature and nurture, from forest to field," with locally sourced ingredients providing the foundation of their distinctive Highland style. What truly sets Fettercairn apart is their unique distillation process: crystal-clear mountain water not only creates the spirit but shapes its character by drenching the copper stills, ensuring that only the purest vapors rise. This whisky is then fully matured in ex-bourbon barrels, which develop the distillery's tropical fruit profile that has become its hallmark.
ABV: 24 Year, 46.5% (93 proof); 28 Year, 42% (84 proof).
What to Pair Them With: These elegant single malts deserve contemplative enjoyment. But do give them a try at dessert time. The 24 Year ’s tropical notes will come forth further in the company of a small piece of dark chocolate with sea salt, while a bit of aged cheese will enhance the complex nutty character of the 28 Year.
Our Guarantee: As with all our premium spirits, these bottles come directly from the distillery via authorized channels, ensuring perfect provenance. Secure yours today!
