In 300 years, only two families have owned Chateau de Ferrand, including today’s owners Pauline Bich (of the Bic ballpoint pen empire) and her husband Phillipe Chandon-Moet (of the Moet-Chandon Champagne house). Yet as the property and its 32 hectares of vineyards have remained relatively stable, over the last decade the chateau has entered a new golden age beginning with the hiring of wine consultant Hubert de Bouard, owner of Chateau Angelus. Today, we’re thrilled to offer you the “2012 that takes us back to Ferrand’s glory years” (Robert Parker). With Bouard’s help, Ferrand’s wines are exquisite, over-delivering in every way, and in 2012 the Classification Commission of Saint-Emilion officially recognized the estate as a Grand Cru Classe, becoming one of the appellation’s top ranked wines. The wine from the 2012 vintage is itself a “gorgeous Saint-Emilion” (Antonio Galloni) and for today’s offer we were able to secure an allocation of this stunning value.

Built in 1702, Ferrand became known for its lavish parties, with Louis XIV’s court consistently flocking to the estate. Eventually catching the eye of Baron Bich, co-founder of the Bic company, the estate was purchased by the family in 1978. The estate itself rests on a limestone plateau adjacent to Chateau Troplong-Mondot overlooking the Dordogne valley. The vineyards are composed of four different soil types sharing one common feature: having a relatively high concentration of clay, best for Merlot, which accounts for 75% of the estate’s plantings. The property is one of the highest and best ventilated vineyards in Saint-Emilion, with well drained soils thanks to channels that carry away excess water. The higher altitude provides slightly cooler temperatures compared to the vineyards in the lowlands of the region, helping with structure and balance.

The fruit is harvested by hand, plot by plot, and vinified and matured separately by batches. The wine is matured on site in French oak and the 2012 vintage is comprised of 77% Merlot, 14% Cabernet Franc and 9% Cabernet Sauvignon. Supple, juicy and amazingly powerful, the wine has excellent depth and balance, with flavors of red fruit complimented by minerality and spice. Enjoy now, but be sure to leave a few bottles to lay down and enjoy over the next decade. If you have never had Ferrand before, make this vintage your first, with orders of 12 bottles coming in their original wooden case. Remember to act quickly, as our allocation will go fast, especially at $31.97 a bottle!
