FATTORIA DI POGGIOPIANO, ROSSO DI SERA

TUSCANY, ITALY 2016

In 1993, Stefano and Alessandro Bartoli purchased the Poggiopiano property just south of Florence, which at the time consisted of an old farmhouse and largely unattended vineyards. Fast-forward a couple decades, and their 2016 Rosso di Sera has made Antonio Galloni’s shortlist of the most exceptional wines being released this year, and he calls it “sumptuous, alluring and exotically beautiful [...] simply magnificent.” Since Poggiopiano’s inception, the Bartoli family, along with esteemed consulting winemaker Attilio Pagli, have emphasized the importance of native Italian grapes; Sangiovese of course reigns as King, but Colorino and Canaiolo remain an important component of Poggiopiano wines. The estate’s sought-after top label, Rosso di Sera, is a stunning and vibrant wine: expressive black cherry, pomegranate, and spice notes bound from the glass, and all the wine’s elements are in perfect harmony—from the first aromas to the incredibly finessed finish. We don’t make claims like this very often, but today it is warranted: Poggiopiano should be on every Italian wine fan’s shortlist for some of the best wine being produced in Tuscany today.

While neighboring wineries became famous for their Super Tuscans with “international” grapes such as Cabernet and Merlot, Poggiopiano made its name championing exclusively native Italian varieties, believing in their untapped potential to make long-lived, powerful wines. Poggio means “small hill” in Italian, and reflects the estate’s pristine hillside location overlooking San Casciano in northwest Chianti Classico. With an elevation nearing 1,000 feet, the vineyards get optimal sun exposure—no doubt contributing to the winery’s reputation for producing opulent and modern styles of wine. 2016 has been recognized as one of Tuscany’s top recent vintages, and the wines being released showcase why. The scores are still trickling in for this new release, but it’s already apparent that the 2016 Rosso di Sera is one that’s not to be missed.
