The Story: The domaine, nearly a century old, has been under family control the entire time, with Emile and Benoit Riffault hewing to the same methods that their ancestors did — that is to say, working only with their hands, and without chemicals or additives, and informed by a deep and intimate knowledge of the vines and terroir. And that terroir, Puligny-Montrachet, has proven, decade after decade, vintage after vintage, to be a brilliant and immensely rewarding partner. "The greatest white wine commune on earth," Clive Coates, one of the foremost authorities on Burgundy in the world, has dubbed it, and believe us when we say there isn't even a trace of hyperbole in his words.
Our Tasting Notes: In the interest of holding your attention until the end, we won't regale you with individual notes on each of these 9 wines, though we can assure you that they are deserving of reams of words. Instead, we will expound a bit on what they have in common. For starters, a gorgeous tension that only the best white wines can deliver, a welcome and enlivening minerality, a vivid expression of fruit, and a texture whose richness and depth is answered perfectly by a vein of subtle acidity. We would be remiss if we did not also mention that they finish gently and beautifully.
Fun Fact: Sauzet makes it a point of pride to age its wines on the lees for 10-12 months to, as they say at the estate, "nourish them."
