EGAN'S CONVICTION 21 YEAR IRISH WHISKEY
IRELAND
WHY BUY:
Irish whisky is having a moment, and also remains a tremendous value. And this 21 Year Old from Egan’s, deftly finished in XO Cognac casks, delivers a great deal of refinement and stateliness at an invitingly great price, along with the lightly creamy, lightly sweet profile that is Egan's signature. And the presentation, an iconic black bottle in a signature gift box, makes this a striking addition to the bar cart.
WHAT THEY'RE SAYING:
VinePair named a bottle of Egan's the "Best Value Irish Whiskey,” and that’s been par for the course for a while, with critics consistently noting the producer's uncanny ability to deliver complexity and sophistication without the premium price tag that tends to come with long-aged expressions.
THE STORY:
The origin of Egan's can be traced back to the mid-19th century, when it operated as a respected whiskey bonder and bottler, and was among the most respected merchants in all of Ireland. It wasn't until recent years, however, when its fifth- and sixth-generation descendants staged a revival of the brand (based in Tullamore, in county Offaly) that its true potential was unlocked. Thanks to its "re-founding" and a passionate emphasis on craft, Egan's has undergone a renaissance, embracing its common-man legacy while determinedly (and boldly) pushing the boundaries of contemporary Irish whiskey-making.
OUR TASTING NOTES:
That deep honey color is the first tell: this one spent some serious time in wood. The nose hits with fresh waffles and caster sugar, then caramels salted in Cognac and barbecued pineapple. That’s a lot going on, but it coheres, and with the kind of harmony that says: you’re in very good hands. The palate opens with salt, soon breaks into golden syrup Irish honey, then delivers grilled (and lightly charred) peaches and pineapples. The finish stretches out like a held note: salt meeting vanilla and baked apples, and closing with pepper.
ABV:
46% ABV (92 proof).
FUN FACT:
According to Jonathan Egan, the brand's lead "re-founder," the most famous Egan's expression back in the day was Egan's Number Eight, which was produced in tandem with the legendary John Jameson and his son … showing you just how far back the family's roots in Irish whiskey history run.
