DUBOURDIEU

BORDEAUX, FRANCE 2018

Named ‘Man of the Year’ in 2016, Denis Dubourdieu, “world-leading expert on white wine vinification [...] will be remembered as one of the greats of wine science and winemaking” (Decanter). Denis passed away in 2016, leaving behind a remarkable legacy. He was a consultant to some of the best Bordeaux wine estates, including Château d’Yquem, Cheval Blanc, and Margaux, and also produced wine at proprietary estates, such as Château Reynon, Doisy-Däene, and Clos Floridène. Today, his sons Fabrice and Jean-Jacques continue to manage the six Dubourdieu estates and have upheld the family’s reputation for finely crafted Sauternes and white wines—many of which represent some of the best value to be found within Bordeaux. Jean-Jacques’s newest project includes two new Bordeaux whites that continue the family trend of pristine, top-value wines: ‘Liaison’ and ‘Pure.’ Liaison is a blend of Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon, and Pure is 100% Sauvignon Blanc. Both wines are impressively fresh and elegant, and boast price points (with extra Concierge mix-and-match perks) that make them impossible to pass up.

The Dubourdieu family has a long winemaking tradition within Bordeaux; they have been producing wine since the late 1700s within Sauternes, Barsac, Graves, and Côtes de Bordeaux. After his father’s passing, Jean-Jacques took his place at the helm of the ship and continues to oversee the family’s six properties with his brother, Fabrice, and mother, Florence. While Bordeaux’s red and dessert wines may command the most attention, the dry whites are vastly underappreciated. Typically composed primarily of Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon, white Bordeaux runs the spectrum from light and fresh to full and creamy, and often offers up tremendous bang for your buck.

Dubourdieu’s ‘Liaison’ is a classic 50/50 blend of the two grapes. Both grapes shine in this wine: the Sauvignon Blanc adds a core of vibrant citrus and peach, while the Semillon rounds the texture on the palate. A subtle oak character appears on the finish, adding yet another layer of complexity and opulence. From the first sip to the finish, the components of the wine remain in balance. And while this classically styled blend is a picture-perfect representation of white Bordeaux, there’s no denying that Sauvignon Blanc has become a worldwide star, beloved for its versatility and energetic fruit profile. ‘Pure’ is 100% Sauvignon Blanc, and is beautifully bright with an easy-to-love fruit profile, but nothing is overdone—the ripe citrus and floral notes are prominent, but not overwhelming; and the acidity is fresh and lively, but not at all enamel-stripping (as some Sauvignon Blanc can be). If you have to choose only one white wine to please a crowd, this one is an excellent bet. The Dubourdieu legacy for crafting stellar white Bordeaux continues with these new releases—take advantage of special Concierge mix-and-match pricing up to 26% off while it lasts! Please note there is a four-bottle minimum per item.
