VIÑA DON MELCHOR & CONCHA Y TORO 'GRAVAS DEL MAIPO' CABERNET SAUVIGNON

MAIPO VALLEY, CHILE

The second vintage of Don Melchor was the first Chilean wine to land on the prestigious Top 100 List by Wine Spectator, and since then Don Melchor has found itself on the list a remarkable eight times. The Chilean wine icon has made strides as a modern-day benchmark in New World winemaking over the past 30 years, and the 100-point 2018 vintage marks a new milestone of perfection for this cult Cabernet Sauvignon. The fruit for Don Melchor is sourced from the eponymous Don Melchor vineyard within the Puente Alto D.O. in the Maipo Valley, located at the foot of the Andes Mountains, and the wine is crafted by esteemed winemaker Enrique Tirado. At more than 2,000 feet above sea level, the 30+ year old Cabernet Sauvignon vines are from a pre-phylloxera selection brought to Chile from Bordeaux in the late 19th century. The Bordeaux connection runs deep in this tale: in 1987, famous Bordeaux wine consultant Jacques Boissenot joined Viña Concha y Toro, thanks in part to urging from his colleague and “the father of modern winemaking” Emilie Peynaud, who also recognized the opportunity awaiting in Chile’s high-altitude vineyards. Don Melchor is a benchmark for Chilean and New World wines, and arguably, Cabernet Sauvignon as an entire category. The 2018 Don Melchor is a must-have for all Cabernet Sauvignon collectors!

We’re also proud to offer the 2017 Concha y Toro ‘Gravas del Maipo’ Cabernet Sauvignon, a "kind of second wine of Don Melchor" (Luis Gutierrez, Wine Advocate). The 97-point wine also secured a spot on Wine Spectator's 'Top 100 Wines' of 2020. The fruit is sourced from the Puente Alto vineyard in the Maipo Valley and winemaking is overseen by Isabel Mitarakis, who trained under Concha y Toro enology director Marcelo Papa as well as Don Melchor’s Enrique Tirado. The wine presents the unique opportunity to experience the tremendous Puente Alto terroir at a fraction of the price of Don Melchor (sub-$40 with Concierge pricing!). Aged in French oak (25% new, 75% second use) for 14 months, the wine is bursting with red fruits, dried herbs, spices, graphite, dried plum and earth. The 2017 is "classical and structured, with volume [and] power” (Wine Advocate). We’re thrilled to present you this opportunity to collect both labels with special Concierge pricing, available for one week only!
