There are few things in this life that you can count on to go near-perfectly, but Dominus is one of them.
In other words: Christian Moueix has done it again.
The Right Bank icon who crafted the wines of Château Petrus, among many superlative others, has just dropped his 2020 Dominus — a 98-point masterpiece, in the estimation of critic James Suckling. We are so proud and thrilled to be able to offer our private clients access to this new release — a crown jewel for any collection, and especially if you are a passionate devotee of Napa Cab.
In his 98-point review, Suckling called it “Full-bodied with an impressive and refined structure that runs deep and vertical in the wine”, and Lisa Perrotti-Brown of The Wine Independent added that ”it rolls out of the glass with expressive notes of baked blackberries, preserved plums, and kirsch.”
The grapes were grown, as always, on rich, volcanic soil at the base of the Mayacamas Mountains, in the Yountville Appellation of Napa, and exquisite care was taken to prevent them from ripening too quickly in the heat. Arguably, none of Moueix's methods is more important than that of dry farming, which forces a vine's roots to search deeper into the earth for sources of water — a necessary struggle, if the goal is to produce fruit with the depth, complexity, and expressiveness to make world-class wine.
For this bottling, Moueix has gone with a blend of 95% Cabernet Sauvignon and 5% Cabernet Franc, aging in 40% new oak to enhance its feeling of freshness and energy. Notably, the harvest was completed before grapes could be affected by the Glass Fire which started on September 27th, with testing and microfermentations ensuring that berries remained unaffected.
