What They’re Saying: Decanter swooned over its manifold attributes in a 99-point rave, among them an "impressive staying power," a "real depth of concentration of fruit," "long strands of velvety tannins," "pure and symphonic black-toned fruit," and the "kind of lift that makes the wine seem almost featherweight."
The Story: The grapes, as always, were grown on rich, volcanic soil at the base of the Mayacamas Mountains, in the Yountville Appellation of Napa, and exquisite care was taken to prevent them from ripening too quickly in the heat. Arguably, none of Mouiex's methods is more important than that of dry farming, which forces a vine's roots to search deeper into the earth for sources of water — a necessary struggle, if the goal is to produce fruit with the depth, complexity, and expressiveness to make world-class wine.
Specs: For this vintage, Moueix and winemaker Tod Mostero have opted for a near-total proportion of Cabernet Sauvignon, and aged the wine for 16-18 months in 40% new French oak, to enhance its feeling of freshness and energy.
Our Tasting Notes: There are few things in this life that you can count on to go just about perfectly, and Dominus is one of them. This is a legit crown jewel for any collection, and especially if you are a passionate devotee of Napa Cab. We marveled at its intensity, drive, and persistence, and were charmed by the way it manages, adroitly, to sidestep any heaviness. A wine you can open now, and enjoy its freshness and energy, but you can cellar it with confidence, too, trusting that it will age gracefully over the next 15-20 years.
Fun Fact: Moueix was launched on his career path by his father, Jean-Pierre, who sold some of his Monets to purchase land for a winery.
