DOMINUS ESTATE
NAPA VALLEY, CALIFORNIA 2014
WHY BUY:
Mature Dominus, direct from the winery, is almost impossible to secure. This 98‑point 2014 has 12 years of age and flawless provenance, shipped direct from their cellars in Napa. What you're getting, beyond pristine provenance, is further affirmation of the brilliance of Christian Moueix, the Right Bank legend who turned Petrus into an icon and who has turned Dominus into one of the most-watched properties in the world. If you want a blue‑chip Napa Cabernet that’s already entering its prime, now’s the moment to act.
WHAT THEY'RE SAYING:
“It waltzes out,” The Wine Independent wrote, in its 98-point paean, “with flamboyant notes of blackcurrant jelly, baked plums, and boysenberry preserves, leading to suggestions of menthol, cast-iron pan, smoked meats, and cloves.” It went on to hail its manifold attributes: “dense, muscular ... framed by ripe, grainy tannins and plenty of freshness ... [and] finishing long and earthy.” And this, mind you, was when the review first appeared, in 2016.
OUR TASTING NOTES:
This defies the Napa stereotypes. Intense without being heavy, powerful without being ponderous, and remarkably fresh despite its concentration, it embodies, for us, what Napa at its best can be. It opens with a treasure chest of deep, dark cassis fruit, along with a mineral precision that feels almost engineered. There’s a vein of graphite running through everything, as if someone had mixed volcanic dust with velvet and somehow made it drinkable. The tannins are remarkable here, in being simultaneously present and absent, structuring the wine without making themselves felt. As for the finish, it’s long and full and rich, and will have you eager for the next sip, the next pour. Best of all, perhaps, it’s got that wonderful Dominus quality of being serious enough for long aging yet so immediately, gleefully, pleasurable that waiting feels almost — almost — unnecessarily virtuous.
THE STORY:
Christian Moueix has achieved so many remarkable milestones, and racked up so many accolades, that the extraordinary has come to feel, well — kind of ordinary. We expect elite things of him, and why wouldn’t we? He taught us to. Of all his many successes in the world of wine, Mouiex's signal accomplishment is surely his transformation of Château Petrus into a global icon, but what might be even more mind-blowing is that his time at Petrus was not a career-crowning achievement, but a career-launching one. Since starting Dominus, in 1983, Mouiex has devoted himself, without compromise, and with singular focus, to an ideal that has since become the standard for many elite estates in California: to marry European finesse to Napa power. The extraordinary wines he made, early on, powerful and elegant, and speaking soulfully of their terroir, helped to propel Dominus into the top-rank of Napa estates, and from there, over the years, into the top tier of properties in the world. At the heart of his approach is an almost-unheard of practice in sun-drenched Napa: dry farming. By denying the vines irrigation, Moueix forces them to struggle, sending the roots deep into the volcanic soil at the base of the Mayacamas Mountains. The result is fruit that possesses both extraordinary complexity and terroir specificity, which turns into wine of glorious complexity and refinement.
WHAT TO PAIR THEM WITH:
You'll want to match this one with beef at its most concentrated and intense: a dry-aged ribeye, a pot of wine-braised short ribs, or a textbook duck confit.
FUN FACT:
Moueix was boosted on his career path by his father, Jean-Pierre, who sold some of his possessions to enable his son to purchase land for a winery. Those possessions? Oh, just some Monets.
