DOMINIO DE CALOGIA

RIBERA DEL DUERO, SPAIN

WHY BUY:

This passion project of José Manuel Pérez Ovejas — named Winemaker of the Year in Spain three times — is a testament to micro-production viticulture at its most exacting, and we’re thrilled to say that we’re the only place in the country to get these soulful, limited-release wines. Today’s offer includes the 96-point 2020 Ribera del Duero, which Wine Enthusiast called “luxurious," and the Cuvée S 2020, which the usually conservative Jancis Robinson rated 18.5 out of 20). As is customary in Ribera del Duero, these wines have been properly aged before release, allowing their considerable structure to soften and their complex aromatics to develop, meaning they offer immediate pleasure while still possessing the architecture for extended cellar evolution.

WHAT THEY’RE SAYING:

Wine Enthusiast lauded the 2020 Ribera del Duero as a big, luscious, and pleasure-giving red — "full on the palate, offering vivid acidity, luxurious tannins and black currant, Mission fig, lavender, crème caramel, and fennel-pollen flavors." They particularly noted its "smooth, lengthy finish... marked with notes of chocolate-covered cherry." Jancis Robinson was just as enthusiastic about their Cuvée S 2020, bestowing an extraordinary 18.5 out of 20 and highlighting its silky, luscious texture, with notes of fresh plums, graphite and minerality. Meanwhile, The Wine Advocate declared the debut 2019 Ribera del Duero "a wine that sets the bar for a characterful, classical, elegant and balanced Ribera del Duero red," praising its "velvety mouthfeel, ripeness and oak without excess.”

OUR TASTING NOTES:

These wines deliver the kind of concentrated power that makes Ribera del Duero famous, but with a degree of refinement that separates the truly excellent from the merely very good. The Cuvée S 2020 reveals its 26 months of careful oak aging in a manner that enhances rather than dominates its character — the oak presents itself as a sophisticated frame rather than the subject of the portrait. The 2019 Ribera del Duero captures the estate's dedication to classical expression, with remarkable balance between fruit intensity, structural elements, and that ineffable sense of place that defines great terroir-driven wine. The 2020 Ribera del Duero offers even more aromatic complexity, with its beguiling interplay of dark fruits, Mediterranean herbs, and subtle spice notes that evolve continuously in the glass.

THE STORY:

After thirty years crafting wines at Viña Pedrosa, the family estate where he established himself as one of Spain's premier winemakers, José Manuel Pérez Ovejas has created something entirely his own in Dominio de Calogía. The spirit of terroir runs deep in his veins — his father, Benjamín Pérez, was a renowned winegrower who played an instrumental role in establishing the Ribera del Duero Designation of Origin. This boutique winery sits in a spectacular setting between the towns of Roa and Pedrosa de Duero, nestled at the foot of the majestic Cuesta Manvirgo hill. José and his wife Silvia Ortega own all of the vineyards in this special terroir, a pago (subdivision of land) from which the winery takes its name and that defines the distinctive character of their wines. For José Manuel, authenticity and purity stand as the guiding principles of his winemaking philosophy. His commitment to small production allows him to achieve what he describes as "the perfect balance in which every nuance is taken into account." The industry has recognized his extraordinary talent with multiple accolades, three times awarding him Winemaker of the Year, in 2017, 2018, and 2023.

WHAT TO PAIR THEM WITH:

These powerful yet vibrant expressions of Tempranillo call for bold, hearty cooking. Consider an herb-crusted rack of lamb, a slow-roasted pork shoulder with fennel and orange, or a rustic bean-and-sausage stew.
