DOMAINE VACHERON

LOIRE, FRANCE

WHY BUY
In our book, no one makes Sancerre like Vacheron. No one. Not with this purity and refinement. Not with this degree of hedonism. We’re so proud and privileged to be able to offer their wines for the first time here at Concierge, a development years in the making. Cousins Jean-Laurent and Jean-Dominique Vacheron, 4th generation winemakers, are relentlessly detailed in their methods, from hand-picking low-yielding fruit to vinifying each parcel by specific terroir to using only homemade compost and brews from collected rainfall, and this, in combination with the classically flinty silex soils that make up their famed terroir, results in wines of aromatic vivacity, glorious purity and concentration, and extraordinary mineral lift. The words of Robert Parker are as apt today as they were when he first penned them: Vacheron is “absolutely fabulous and always a Best Buy.” They’re also as scarce as they come, making today a rare event that you have to jump on.

WHAT THEY'RE SAYING
Vinous awarded 96 points to the Belle Dame 2021, praising its “elegance and refinement” that “positively flows across despite its dense concentration,” with “sumptuous, pure flavors of damson and blueberry while the flint soils provide a fine line on the finish.” Decanter gave the Rosé 2023 an impressive 95 points, calling it “a gloriously scented and inviting wine” that's “a feast for the senses, with a fresh, vinous quality” and “an exceptionally fine dry rosé” that's “pure, delicate and long.” James Suckling awarded the Rouge 2022 94 points, describing it as “a precise, harmonious, and silky red” that's “bright and transparent, with a lively core of succulent berries” and “focused and juicy with a delicious finish.”

OUR TASTING NOTES

The flint soils that define Sancerre terroir show up everywhere in this collection of 7, but perhaps nowhere more powerfully than in the Belle Dame. There's a silky density here that feels almost Burgundian, yet the finish anchors you squarely in the Loire, which is renowned for its stony precision and length. The rosé is a departure, but only in style; most Sancerre rosés whisper, but this one speaks with a commanding authority. We love the way its aromatic complexity builds from the first nose through a finish that lingers far longer than you might expect. That silex soil influence runs through the standard rouge as well, grounding bright red fruit and pepper with mineral structure that gives the wine its impressive focus and juicy persistence. The blanc lineup showcases different expressions of that same flinty terroir, from the village bottling's clean citrus and stone to the single-vineyard cuvées that add layers of richness and complexity without losing that essential Sancerre clarity. If there’s anything that unites all these wines, it’s their resounding purity, which, because it’s Vacheron, you know has been achieved the hard way and from the ground up.

THE STORY
Picture the medieval hilltop town of Sancerre: its 15th-century houses, its narrow cobblestone streets, its ruins of a 12th-century fortress. Beautiful, no? But many of the winemakers who gave the town its identity have left, taking flight to purpose-built facilities in the valleys below, leaving only four estates today still working within the town itself. The Vacheron cousins have steadfastly refused to join the exodus. “Sancerre without production is not Sancerre,” Jean-Dominique told The Buyer website, and the cousins have put real weight behind that sentiment. Since taking over this 120-year-old family domain, Jean-Laurent and Jean-Dominique have transformed it into arguably the finest producer in the entire appellation through methods so exacting they've earned themselves the ultimate compliment: comparisons to Burgundy. They've acquired parcels in the most coveted lieu-dits, converted operations to full biodynamic farming, and pursued an ideal of perfection in the vineyard that is either fanatical or obsessive or maybe both. “The idea is to bring the concept of Burgundy to Sancerre, but not doing a bad copy,” Jean-Laurent told The Buyer. Not to worry, Jean-Laurent. There is nothing about Vacheron that is either “bad” or a “copy.”

WHAT TO PAIR THEM WITH
The Belle Dame pairs beautifully with pan-seared duck breast or wild salmon, while the regular rouge works well with lighter preparations, like herb-crusted lamb or a mushroom-and-goat cheese risotto. The rosé is the bottle to reach for when it comes to grilled fish or charcuterie, and the blancs complement everything from oysters to goat cheese.

FUN FACT
For their top red cuvée Les Marnes, the Vacheron cousins age the wine in barrels previously used by Domaine de la Romanée Conti: the ultimate testament to their love of Burgundy.
