Of the five, only two have so far been reviewed, with Decanter awarding 95 points to the Gevrey-Chambertin 'En Créot,' sourced from vines planted in 1956 ("Very Gevrey," it wrote: "bright," "fresh," "perfumed") and 92 points to the Bourgogne Rouge 'Les Grandes Chaillots' ("a delicious wine" of "rewarding richness and density that lingers invitingly on the palate")
Our recent tastings showed all of them to be wines of great character, with a foundational depth that simply can't be faked.
The excellence of this vintage is only part of the larger Liger-Belair story this century, the unfolding and compelling saga of an estate's methodical and steady rise in a hidebound region where change comes slowly. When Liger-Belair assumed control of the domaine, in 2001, he immediately set about restoring its old vines and instilling all-organic principles. The results — thanks to his undimmable drive and determination, and his exacting quest for terroir purity — have been nothing short of dramatic.
And nothing short of thrilling, too — especially for those of us who revere old-school soul in our wines.
