DOMAINE MATROT

BURGUNDY, FRANCE 2022

WHY BUY: Neal Martin recently declared, "The 2022s [from the house of Matrot] are the best I have tasted to date ... This is a domaine going places. Hitch a ride" — adding his name to a growing chorus of people, us included, who in recent years have been touting Domaine Matrot as one of the smartest buys in Burgundy, delivering the charm, grace, and infinite mystery of Meursault for a fraction of what you'd pay for Leflaive, Carillon, and Sauzet. Heading our collection today is a 97-point Meursault Premier Cru that Martin called "stunning," a 95-point 1er Cru Chalumeaux that Jasper Morris deemed "the best Chalumeaux that I can remember," and a 95-point 1er Cru Charmes that Martin hailed as "complex ... enticing ... beautifully crafted.” This is your chance, folks, to stock up on authentic Burgundian character, before the wider public latches on to this wonderful estate on the dramatic upswing.

OUR TASTING NOTES: We could go on for hours about these nine wines, but brevity being a virtue, we'll instead talk about what makes this collection so remarkable: the Matrot sisters' ability to coax crystalline purity and genuine depth from every site they touch. To distill the house style into a few choice phrases: precision without coldness, power without weight, complexity that unfolds gradually, lingeringly, rather than announcing itself with fanfare. The Perrières perfectly illustrates this approach, with its crushed stone minerality and weightless concentration, while the Charmes shows how seduction and laser-like precision can coexist in the same glass. The Chalumeaux, meanwhile, is typical of their ability to produce wines of balance and proportion, without sacrificing depth. What's most impressive is how this philosophy extends across the entire range: the Bourgogne-level wines aren't afterthoughts but genuine expressions of craft, and the reds prove that white wine specialists can work magic with Pinot Noir when they understand the vineyards as intimately as these two do.

WHAT THEY'RE SAYING: Neal Martin of Vinous was practically breathless about the Perrières, awarding 97 points and declaring it a wine that "really gets to grips with the terroir on the nose, delivering that crushed stone element that distinguishes this Premier Cru ... completely harmonious, unfurling with each swirl of the glass." His 95-point review of the Charmes praised it as “complex … enticing,” a "beautifully crafted Meursault that should age effortlessly over the next 15-20 years." Jasper Morris called the Chalumeaux "really classy" and "the best Chalumeaux that I can remember," noting its "fresher, limier, more floral style of Puligny."

THE STORY: If you don't know the wines of Domaine Thierry & Pascale Matrot, now's the time. The star is indubitably on the rise for this Meursault estate, which, like many historic properties throughout the region, has had new life breathed into it by a younger generation of winemakers: in this case, sisters Elsa and Adèle Matrot. Prices that are reasonable now are almost certain to escalate, given the terrific run of wines they've had in recent years: 2019, in particular, was a banner vintage for Matrot, with their Puligny Les Chalumeaux and Meursault-Charmes both winning plaudits from critics around the globe. The seat of the estate, today, rests on what was once the sisters' grandparents' home, which rests on some of the most extraordinary vineyards in the Côte de Beaune. The family took hold of the property in 1914, and over the years began developing and extending the estate. Throughout that time, they have been steadfast in their commitment to time-honored ways: to horse ploughs, to rigorous pruning, to long fermentations. What the sisters have brought, since taking over from their father Thierry in 2016, is their keenly honed palates, and a drive for producing truly world-class wine.

FUN FACT: Domaine Matrot has been certified organic since 2000, making them early adopters of sustainable practices in Burgundy when organic viticulture was still considered radical rather than fashionable.

OUR GUARANTEE: As always, we only buy and source directly from the estate to ensure that your wines will arrive with pristine provenance. Hop aboard a rising star, and secure your bottles and cases today!
