DOMAINE MACHARD DE GRAMONT, POMMARD 1ER CRU, 'CLOS BLANC'

BURGUNDY, FRANCE 2017

Today we’re elated to offer a rarity from one of the greatest vineyards in Pommard. Considered to be one of the best three plots in the commune, “Clos Blanc” is a small walled vineyard that once belonged to the Citeaux monks. Lying just to the south of Les Grands Epenots, this vineyard produces wines that are stunningly pure, focused, and structured - making this an incredibly age-worthy Pommard that is sure to go the distance. With names like Albert Grivault, Louis Jadot, Génot-Boulanger and Seguin-Manuel producing highly-regarded bottlings of this very vineyard, it’s easy to understand why this vineyard demands a price point to match. Fetching $100+ from almost every producer, it’s rare (to say the least) to find this cru for anything less. But we’re here today with an offer to top them all.

From an outstanding small producer, Domaine Machard de Gramont, we have a unique opportunity to offer their Pommard “Clos Blanc” from the incredible 2017 vintage for under $50. Established in 1984 by Arnaud Machard de Gramont, the domaine is located in the south of Nuits-Saint-Georges, close to Premeaux-Prissey. Prior to the establishment of Domaine Machard de Gramont, Arnaud owned a larger domaine with his brother Bertrand who began his career at the legendary Domaine Comte de Vogue. After their grandfather passed, they decided to go their separate ways and Arnaud established his own domaine with his two sons. With a large portion of their vines rescued from the war, long periods of restoration took place to revive the vines. Today, some of their vines date back to 1914, though the average age of their vines are 30+ years old.

This “under-the-radar” grower produces extraordinary wines from 20 hectares of vines in the Cote de Beaune and the Cote de Nuit. Today, his sons Alban and Alexis continue to run the domaine with meticulously high standards. Tending the vines by hand, the grapes are exclusively hand-harvested and vinified using natural yeasts using low temperatures in oak barrels. The wine is then aged for 12-16 months prior to release. With such small production, they rarely offer their wines for review, but we’re thrilled to have the chance to have a small allocation of their wine for you today. With prices of this world-class cru often reaching $150 a bottle, today is a rare value from one of Pommard’s top sites!
