DOMAINE LEFLAIVE, MÂCON-VERZÉ

BURGUNDY, FRANCE 2024

Domaine Leflaive doesn't just make the greatest white wines in the world, it makes some of the greatest wines in the world, period — wines that are worth every pretty penny they cost. But what if you could have the same extraordinary terroir and the same exquisite craftsmanship, and at a cost of less than $100 a bottle? You'd be ecstatic, and want to lay in immediately for cases.

Well, prepare to stock up, folks, because we've just secured an allocation of their Mâcon-Verzé 2024an absolute steal of a deal at $80, a wine produced with the same exacting, rigorous biodynamic care that is lavished on their legendary estate plots in Puligny

Unlike the estate's Grand Crus, which only begin to unfurl over time, the Mâcon-Verzé is approachable right now, in its youth, while still offering enough structure for a few years in the cellar.

If, that is, you can wait.

And if you can, you’re far more patient than us; we found it impossible to resist opening immediately.

Mâcon-Verzé is not Puligny-Montrachet, but what is? It’s a highly regarded sub-appellation within Burgundy's Mâconnais region, one of 27 approved village designations in the broader Mâcon appellation. What that means, in plain English, is that the grapes come from a strictly defined, higher-quality terroir than a generic "Mâcon-Villages" blend.

Verzé itself is distinguished by west-facing slopes and unique limestone soils that produce Chardonnay of real finesse and real worth: with a fine minerality, a crisp citrus edge, and a wonderful floral lift. No tipping over into heaviness or over-richness.

When Leflaive expanded here, in the mid-2000s, it was to prove that top-tier, biodynamically farmed Chardonnay could be made outside the ultra-expensive central villages.

They have not only proven that point. They have proven it many times over.

The wine is fermented in stainless steel with indigenous yeasts, then aged across a mix of steel, concrete, and neutral oak, an approach that helps the wine steer clear of the flabbiness and excessive butteriness of many Chardonnays. The goal here: crystalline purity, lively citrus, and a chalky, mouthwatering minerality.

That’s the Leflaive signature.

A signature, by the way, that's older than the United States.

Founded in 1717, when the U.S. was still called British America, Leflaive has changed precious little since its launch. Biodynamic farming, long natural fermentations, indigenous yeasts, devotional care of the land — this is the approach, and it extends from the humblest Mâcon parcel to the most exalted Grand Cru.

Pedigree, tradition, continuity … these words mean things to Leflaive.

And we know they mean things to you, too, which is why we moved quickly to acquire this one when the opportunity arose.

A great and exacting wine, at a price that invites you not to sip cautiously but to pour freely.

We call that — a cause for celebration.

Secure your bottles and cases today.
