Produced in miniscule quantities and seldom exported, these wines are fixtures on the tables of great Parisian restaurants but remain exceptionally difficult to find in the U.S.
On the one hand, it’s a great shame that wines this exceptional are made in such small quantities that few get to taste them, but on the other hand, and selfishly, we hope that fact never changes, and we think we speak for all the dedicated and discerning Burgundians of the world. We'd prefer to keep this insider’s insider to ourselves.
Run your eye down the names of the 10 bottles we've curated for your consideration, and you'll thrill to the roll call of those extraordinary properties — Chambertin Clos de Bèze Grand Cru, Chambertin Grand Cru, Mazy-Chambertin — but more than that, what you'll notice straightaway is that this is a collection of wines that turn up on the lists of the grand Paris tables and in the back rooms of the serious French merchants ... and almost nowhere on this side of the Atlantic.
The house style is proudly, stubbornly old-school. Make that: gloriously old-school. These are wines of great structure and balance, and with that hard-to-define quality of mystery and character, speaking of something dusky and eternal, that can only come from the Old World.
Those wines that do find their way over here end up endearing themselves to the critics, who inevitably reach for the loftiest registers of their rhetoric.
Neal Martin penned a love letter to the 2020 Clos de Vougeot Vieilles Vignes, sourced from a parcel planted in 1927 and in the upper portion of the clos. In a 96-point rave for Vinous, he extolled its "fine structure, quite fine tannins with a keen line of acidity,” and its "complexity and mineralité on the prolonged finish." Wine Spectator was sent to swooning over the 2019 Clos de Vougeot a "graceful, delineated red" showing "black cherry, plum, iron and earth flavors" that "feels effortless." Decanter reviewed the 2020 Clos de Vougeot, and came away similarly enamored, citing its "dark cassis fruit, with a smoky, mineral edge and very firm tannins that lead to a lingering finish."
The roots of the domaine go all the way back to 1782, which elicits little more than a ho-hum in Burgundy, but the story proper really begins in 1919, when General Henri Rebourseau, who served on the front lines during World War I, consolidated the family’s holdings in Gevrey-Chambertin.
Today, Rebourseau farms 13.5 hectares in the Côte de Nuits, nearly half of it in prestigious Grands Crus. Since 2018 the property has belonged to the Bouygues family, who handed technical direction to Jean de Surrel and his sons, Bénigne and Louis. The farming went certified organic back in 2006 and biodynamic in 2008, well ahead of the fashion, and the house holds its wines for extended aging before release rather than rushing them to market.
In recent vintages, we’ve noticed a greater precision in the wines, but, wonderfully, with no less of that brooding, old-soul character that is the Rebourseau stamp.
