DOMAINE FAIVELEY
BURGUNDY, FRANCE 2023
WHY BUY:
Erwan and Eve Faiveley have not only revived this historic estate, they've helped to revolutionize Burgundy winemaking itself. These seventh-generation siblings have dramatically invested in new wineries in Mercurey and Nuits-Saint-Georges, adopted cutting-edge technology, and expanded their holdings across Burgundy's most prestigious appellations. The 2023 vintage is a revealing (and delicious) portrait of how they’ve tapped into their extraordinary talents to transform this historic estate into an exciting powerhouse. Our resident Master of Burgundy and a Faiveley loyalist, Stacey Sondek, calls 2023 "an exceptional vintage," a classic Burgundian “cooler year” that has produced wines (including, in this curation, a couple of sterling Grand Crus) of remarkable purity, unerring finesse, and deep, deep resonance. This is about as thrilling as wine gets, folks. You don’t want to miss out.
OUR TASTING NOTES:
In our tasting, we were struck, again and again, by how consistently these wines capture that classic Burgundian tension between richness and pinpoint precision, whether it's the mineral-driven Côte Chalonnaise whites or the more structured reds from the esteemed communes of Côte de Nuits. The 2023 vintage has produced wines that exemplify everything we love about Faiveley's evolution: they have the structure to age beautifully for a decade or more, but they're genuinely pleasurable right now, offering immediate accessibility without sacrificing long-term potential. Across the range, these are wines of real presence and confidence. The whites display concentrated fruit married to mineral backbone and complex aromatics that keep evolving in the glass, while the reds reveal layers of bright red fruit, earthy mushroom notes, and subtle spice … and all of this wrapped in polished (and not at all aggressive) tannins. What lingers, long after the last glass is poured, is how exceptionally each wine expresses its specific terroir (from the citrus brightness and mineral complexity of the Côte Chalonnaise expressions to the deeper, more structured profiles of the Côte de Nuits bottlings) while still speaking, and eloquently and forcefully at that, in the distinct voice of the house.
THE STORY:
When Erwan and Eve Faiveley assumed control of this historic property in 2005, they inherited both a blessing and a challenge. The blessing: nearly 200 years of accumulated terroir across Burgundy's most prestigious appellations, including their monopole Corton Clos des Cortons (which the family had acquired in 1873). The challenge: to adapt the legendary house style to the modern age, so that the fruits of that glorious terroir could be accessed without collectors having to wait a decade for the wines to evolve. And so, with the hiring of winemaker Jérôme Flous in 2007, they set about on an ambitious plan to recalibrate their operations. New fermentation equipment and temperature-controlled cellars were installed, extraction processes refined to capture flavor without harsh tannins, and each of their 54 vineyard parcels began receiving individual attention. The results have been little short of remarkable. Their wines today deliver immediate pleasure while also retaining the structural integrity that makes great Burgundy worth cellaring.
FUN FACT:
Domaine Faiveley owns one of Burgundy's few monopole Grand Cru vineyards, the Corton Clos des Cortons. That is to say, they're the sole proprietor of this entire 1.6-hectare parcel, giving them complete control over a piece of Burgundian terroir that dates back to medieval times.
