You might not think of us as bargain hunters, and it's true — our mission is to scour the globe in search of the most exceptional and unique wines and spirits, not necessarily to spend our days chasing after eye-popping deals. But trust me: it's as much a point of pride for us to source a sleeper hit Cab as it is to score a Japanese whisky that fetches $800.

Which is why we can't stop grinning over here at today's offer: a Châteauneuf du Pape Grands Classiques for $30.

The vintage: 2020, one of the most sought-after of the century.

The house: one of the oldest in all of the Rhône Valley, the venerable Domaine de la Présidente. Founded in 1615, in the municipality of Sainte Cécile les Vignes (not far from Avignon, the capital city of Côtes du Rhône), Présidente is a family-run estate, with vineyards in four different appellations: Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Côtes du Rhône Villages Cairanne, Côtes du Rhône Villages and Côtes du Rhône. As we all know, this is some of the finest terroir in the world, its combination of ancient limestone clay soils and Mediterranean climate (including the legendary Mistral wind that blows from north to south and cools the vineyard) having proven magically essential to making wines as elegant as they are complex.

Jeb Dunnuck has long been a Présidente fan, and it was his glowing reviews of their 2020 portfolio that set in motion our acquisition of this allocation.

The CDP earned the largest share of his praise, with Dunnuck deeming it "clearly the standout in the lineup" and awarding a potential 92 points. It's made up of 80% Grenache, 10% Syrah, and 5% each of Cinsault and Mourvèdre, all destemmed. And all the wines were aged in tank, save for the Syrah, which was aged in barrels. Dunnuck's tasting notes set our mouths to watering: "Lots of darker berry fruits, peppery garrigue, and a touch of tapenade give way to a medium to full-bodied tank sample that has notable purity, outstanding balance, and a great finish."
