DOMAINE DE LA CHAPELLE
RHÔNE VALLEY, FRANCE 2021
Why Buy: In a bid to cement the world-class status of their Hermitage wines, Domaines Paul Jaboulet Aîné opted, with the 2021 vintage, to give them their own label, and these two 96-pointers from superstar winemaker Caroline Frey more than ratify that bold decision. Not only do they capture the essence of Hermitage's legendary terroir with a thrilling vibrancy (h/t to Frey's unwavering commitment to organic and biodynamic practices),and not only do they impart an extraordinary sense of something deeply personal and distinctive. They’re also not inconsiderable values, relative to the competition in Hermitage, and you won’t have to cellar them for years in order to drink them — they’re showing wonderfully already.
What They're Saying: Jane Anson lauded the Blanc Chevalier de Sterimberg 2021, in her 96-point paean, as "a white wine with distinction, complexity, and a sense of place,” going on to note that there is “plenty of aging ability on display." James Suckling awarded a similar 96 points to the Hermitage AOC 2021, marveling at its "incredibly deep and complex nose” and it "enormous tannin structure that's very refined."
Our Tasting Notes: The Blanc Chevalier de Sterimberg 2021 dazzles with its tension between opulence and minerality. It opens with a gentle whisper of honeysuckle, building to a full-throated chorus of stone fruits and citrus. What keeps you reaching for another sip, another glass, is the acidity, so deftly deployed. The Hermitage AOC 2021 is equally compelling, a symphony of dark fruits and spice. The tannins are formidable yet silky, providing structure without overwhelming the palate. The sense of balance on display here, while still delivering so much energy and vitality, is remarkable.
The Story: Domaine de la Chapelle's renaissance under Caroline Frey has been nothing short of revolutionary. Since taking the helm in 2005, Frey has transformed this historic 4-hectare estate from a fading icon into a beacon of innovation. Her approach is hands-on and deeply personal – you're as likely to find her in the vineyards, pruning shears in hand, as in the cellar. Frey's dedication to organic and biodynamic viticulture goes beyond trend-chasing; it's a fundamental philosophy that permeates every aspect of winemaking at the domaine. With the rebranding, for the first time these wines will be distributed through La Place de Bordeaux – a testament to their elite standing.
The Specs: Both wines are certified organic, a reflection of Frey's commitment to sustainable viticulture. The Blanc, 100% Marsanne, ferments and ages for 6 months in a mix of concrete “eggs" and demi-muids, while the red, 100% Syrah, spends 12 months in oak barrels (15% new) and concrete "eggs." This judicious use of oak allows the terroir to shine through, resulting in wines of remarkable purity and expression.
What to Pair Them With: These wines deserve a meal to match their complexity. Think herb-crusted rack of lamb or a morel risotto for the red, and a rich and creamy chicken dish for the white. But don't be afraid to experiment – both wines can stand up to bold flavors.
Fun Fact: Frey is actively working to future-proof the estate against climate change, experimenting with heat-resistant rootstocks and exploring unconventional vineyard techniques. It's this forward-thinking approach, combined with a deep respect for Hermitage's winemaking heritage, that defines the new-era Domaine de la Chapelle.
