The official beverage of the NBA is...Napa Valley Cabernet? The professional basketball league has developed an unofficial reputation for fine wine obsession over the years that ESPN has referred to as “an intense love affair”: from coordinating team outings to tasting rooms, conspicuously sipping legendary (and legendarily expensive) bottles from their cellars, and some players even releasing their own labels. Widely considered one of the greatest shooters, the Warriors’ Steph Curry has made a name as one of the top players in the NBA, and the Curry family is now the latest to leave their mark on the wine world. Ayesha Curry and sister-in-law Sydel have partnered with Napa’s iconic Coup de Foudre winery proprietor John Schwartz to launch Domaine Curry, which focuses on bold, classically styled Napa Cabernet Sauvignon. The 2016 Domaine Curry Cabernet is a big wine with a bold, dark fruit profile that Galloni calls “beautifully layered” with “explosive energy.” Domaine Curry Cabernet certainly has the star pedigree, but luckily the wine is a slam dunk in itself (sorry—couldn’t resist).

“Coup de foudre” is French for lightning strike, or more figuratively “love at first sight.” The boutique Calistoga winery of the same name was inspired by Schwartz’s first encounter with his eventual wife while living in France. Since the first vintage in 2004, Coup de Foudre has produced a number of highly rated blockbusters, and Schwartz has collaborated with other entrepreneurs to produce wines under different labels as well, including Napa-based Amuse Bouche and Au Sommet, and Paso Robles-based PharaohMoans. Schwartz describes his wine style as “approachable now but [with] the bones and density to age gracefully over time.” The latest partnership with Femme 31 (Ayesha and Sydel’s brand) to produce Domaine Curry wines certainly fits into this established style.
