DOMAINE CHENEVIÈRES CHABLIS GRAND CRU
BURGUNDY, FRANCE 2016
People tend to have a “love it or hate it” relationship with Chardonnay, and while I’m firmly in the “love it” camp, there’s a big misconception that all Chardonnay is basically the same. That couldn’t be farther from the truth! Chardonnay is hands-down the world’s most popular white wine grape, and is grown in an amazing number of regions (thanks to the grape’s ability to thrive in a variety of climates); however, I firmly believe it finds its spiritual home in Chablis, where it transforms into a completely unique style of wine that is often copied, but never, ever duplicated. As New York Times’ Eric Asimov explains, “while it’s possible to make Bordeaux-like red blends in California or sauvignon blancs reminiscent of Sancerre in New Zealand, nowhere else produces a chardonnay remotely like Chablis.” Once you have experienced the racy acidity and backbone of minerality from a classically styled Chablis, you can never forget it.
Our 2016 Domaine Chenevières Grand Cru Chablis offer today is a cuvée from Grand Cru vineyards, blended to achieve ideal balance and complexity. This is quintessential Grand Cru Chablis: powerful, precise, and mineral driven, highlighted by sweet citrus and green apple notes. The racy acidity gives the wine laser-focused tension, but the four years in bottle have softened the texture and introduced a new layer of complexity. Burgundy is notorious for its sky-high prices, but Chablis remains a relative bargain—made even sweeter today with limited-time Concierge pricing up to 22% off!
2016 kept vintners on their toes throughout the season: the growers had to deal with frost, hail, and rain, and many estates had to cut their Chablis production by up to 50%. Needless to say, everyone was nervous. But wine will always keep us guessing, and after a few years in bottle, the limited inventory of 2016 wines have an impressive energy and precision that you won’t want to pass up. While the elusive concept of terroir is often thrown around in wine discussion, the concept comes into clear focus when analyzing the best wines from Chablis. Whether you’re a long-time fan of Chablis or are just being introduced, you’ll want to have a few bottles of this wine on hand.
