DIPLOMATICO RUM, THE DISTILLERY COLLECTION
PLANAS VALLEY, VENEZUELA
Diplomático Distillery recently placed #2 in 'Top Trending Rum Brands of the World' by Drinks International and was awarded 'Spirit Brand of the Year' in 2018 by Wine Enthusiast, proving without a doubt that connoisseurs can find outstanding value within the distinctive category of top shelf rum. While ageing and blending are key elements of producing premium rum, Diplomático stands out for its unique utilization of three distillation methods—with each method individually showcased in their acclaimed ‘Distillery Collection,’ a lineup of special-edition bottlings. These in-demand collectible releases have spirit enthusiasts justifiably excited: Diplomático’s second bottling in the collection, their No. 2 Barbet Rum, earned 98 points at the prestigious Ultimate Spirits Challenge and won the coveted Chairman’s Trophy; the final release of the collection, the No. 3 Pot Still Rum, recently debuted and was awarded an outstanding 95 points. We’ve been allocated a limited number of bottles of the No. 3 release along with both previous editions, No. 1 Batch Kettle Rum and No. 2 Barbet Rum, giving our Concierge customers the rare chance to collect and compare these prized award winners themselves!
Diplomático Distillery is located in the Planas Valley at the foot of the Andes mountains and is surrounded by a vast number of sugar cane fields. The exceptional natural environment of the Terepaima National Park, located near the distillery, is ideal for cultivating premium rum—from sugar cane production to barrel ageing—as it has favorable climate conditions such as warm days, cool nights, and high humidity, as well as pure water and fertile soils. Established in 1959, the distillery has been privately owned since 2002 and has become one of the most prized rum producers in the country. Following the strict guidelines of the ‘Ron de Venezuela’ DOC (which forbids the use of artificial color, flavor, or aroma and requires a minimum two-year maturation in white oak barrels), Diplomático combines traditional and modern distillation techniques using both sugar cane molasses and sugar cane honeys. The three distillation processes include the use of a Barbet column still (a continuous distillation system originally from France), a batch kettle still (a hybrid system comprised of a batch distillation drum and connected column still) and a traditional pot still—all three methods contribute to a plethora of styles showcased in the Diplomático portfolio, ranging from lighter rums to more complex styles.
Diplomático created the Distillery Collection to display the unique qualities of single batches from each still, highlighting the nuances and complexities of rum distillation (see below for production and tasting notes). Along with the release of the No. 3 Pot Still Rum, we were also allocated the other two bottlings from the collection—each of these are rare collector items you can compare and contrast. Given our special pricing up to 25% off when you purchase three bottles, now is the time to add these rare editions to your collection. Don’t miss this extraordinary opportunity!
