DIMARCO TOSCANA IGT
Tuscany, Italy 2021
Why Buy: A terroir-driven 97-pointer from a revered Tuscan winemaker for under $100? Wines rated this high, and at this price, are becoming haystack needle-hard-to-find. But there’s more: it's not just a great wine from a great pedigree for a great price; it’s also drinking beautifully right now. Once again, our hat is off to Marco Bacci, who has shown his genius for combining international varietals with Tuscany's native grape in ways that honor both, while also keeping value for the customer top of mind.
What They're Saying: James Suckling lavished 97 points on it, extolling its "aromatic complexity," its "very pure fruit," its "very balanced nature," its "fine, silky tannins," and its length that "goes on for minutes."
The Specs: The blend combines Old World and New World sensibilities: Cabernet Franc's aromatic complexity, Sangiovese's bright acidity, and Cabernet Sauvignon's noble structure. The estate's growing conditions could hardly be more optimal southeast-facing vineyards on mid-slopes, with soils that bring both structure and finesse to the final wine.
Our Tasting Notes: A delicious and bravura demonstration of why Bacci has earned his reputation for terroir-driven excellence. The Cabernet Franc leads with gorgeous aromatics — violets and herbs mingling with dark fruits. On the palate, the Sangiovese adds that characteristic Tuscan brightness and energy, while the Cabernet Sauvignon provides structure and depth. The integration is seamless, the balance impeccable. A keeper.
The Story: The history of Castello di Bossi stretches back to the 9th century AD, but it's under Marco Bacci's leadership that this estate has ascended to the highest ranks of international wine. Located in Castelnuovo Berardenga, the southernmost appellation of Chianti Classico, the estate sits amid evergreen woods and meticulously tended vineyards. Bacci is ever the forward-thinker, but he has a deep reverence for tradition, and is proudly throwback in his methods, favoring labor-intensive, hands-on work, the limiting of manipulation in the cellar, and the controlling of yields. This approach has brought him enormous renown. Bacci presides over one of Tuscany's most impressive portfolios, and his name today belongs in the company of those winemakers that the most passionate, knowledgeable collectors know to keep their eyes on. He also keeps company in one of the world’s most exclusive clubs (as one of a select few winemakers who can lay claim to having produced a 100-point wine). His holdings now include Renieri in Montalcino and Terre di Talamo in Morellino di Scansano, but, to Bacci’s great credit, each property maintains its distinct identity and terroir expression.
What to Pair It With: The balance here of power and elegance makes it equally at home with rustic Tuscan fare or refined cuisine. Think: a juicy aged grilled ribeye, a wild boar ragu, or a big bowl of pasta with Sunday gravy.
Fun Fact: The castello (castle) in Castello di Bossi isn't just for show — it's one of the best-preserved medieval structures in Chianti Classico, with parts of its defensive walls and towers dating back to the 9th century. Today, these ancient stones help maintain optimal cellar temperatures for aging wine.
