DEWAR'S DOUBLE DOUBLE 38 YEAR BLENDED MALT SCOTCH WHISKY

The Backstory: This bottling is part of a series of four unique limited releases, each intended to celebrate a different regional Scottish flavor. This one showcases the floral notes of the Scottish Upper Highlands.

The Process Behind It: As complex as it is methodical. Master Blender Stephanie Macleod began with both Highland and Island single malt whiskies, which had aged separately, in this case for 38 years. The malts were then blended and recasked and combined with some of Dewar's 37 Year Old whisky to create a second blend, which was also recasked. Macleod was not yet done; she then finished this re-casked second blend in Royal Brackla PX Sherry casks. Dewar's calls this double-double aging.

The Blender: Stephanie Macleod is among the most decorated names in the industry. In 2018, Whisky Magazine named her "Master Blender of the Year, and, for SIX consecutive years, the International Whisky Competition conferred the same honor upon her. Her gifts are many, including an extraordinary skill at blending and a deep sensitivity when it comes to secondary maturation and flavor development.

Our Tasting Notes: If you like the more easy-going character of a blended whisky, the chance to settle in and just enjoy a smooth and seamless ride, you'll be in heaven with this one. That's not to say there's not much going on, not by any stretch. This has a deep, layered complexity, and you'll revel in all the many associations you'll make as you sip and savor a drink that is by turns nutty, spicy, fruity, floral, and oaky. Best of all, perhaps, is the mouthful, so rich and tongue-coating and luxurious – the stamp of superior craftsmanship from first to last.
