Mezcal in and of itself is rare and produced in minuscule quantities, however today's ultra-rare, premium bottling truly represents a once-in-a-lifetime mezcal made exclusively from agave grown in the home pueblo of the internationally renowned producer of single-village mezcal, Del Maguey.
 

Founded in 1995, mezcal visionary Ron Cooper introduced the world to artisanal mezcal produced in the original handcrafted way. Through deep cultural relationships with Zapotec Mexican Indian producers in the remote villages of Oaxaca and Puebla, Mexico. Harnessing ancient, original organic processes - every bottling in their collection is made by individual family palenqueros (producers) in old-style villages. Using a strictly natural and pure process over five hundred years old, the village palenquero captures the true body and spirit of mezcal with only two ingredients: the heart of the maguey (agave), and pure water added only to the fermentation. Their single village mezcals are truly unlike any other and are often noted as being the most rare and pure spirit available in the world. As the founder of Del Maguey notes - "Tequila is Mezcal, and Del Maguey is the true mother or father of all tequilas and mezcals as it is made the sixteenth century way."
 

With an extremely limited quantity produced - only 1062 bottles available in the world - we were elated to have the opportunity to offer our extremely limited allocation to you today. This limited-edition bottling was produced from agave grown at the foot of the sacred mountain of Ybetz. Here, founder Ron Cooper was personally responsible for cleaning the land of trees, plowing, making rows and hand-planting two-year-old maguey Espadin using the old system of "Medios." The land was loaned to them by local partners where they were responsible for maintaining and weeding the area around the maguey plants. Fortunately, they did no such thing. They neglected to weed the land so the plants struggled to find nutrients to grow. The roots had to bore deep in the earth searching for nutrients, resulting in a mezcal of extraordinary depth of flavor with a minerally, wild essence. In the ancient terraces at the mouth of the mountain, the maguey struggled to survive and after nine years, the distinguished character of this singular maguey Espadin is what gives Boca del Cerro its distinguished character. After toasting to their 20th Anniversary at Del Maguey with this once-in-a-lifetime Mezcal, they placed the remainder in glass where it has rested for four years. Only 1062 bottles of this single-batch, Single Village Mezcal was made to celebrate 24 years of sharing their love of Mezcal with the world. Boca del Cerro is pure liquid art and a true expression of the hand of the maker.
