DAMILANO, LECINQUEVIGNE BAROLO
PIEDMONT, ITALY 2017
You can't get enough Barolo, and neither can we. And this one, folks, is as approachable and crowd-pleasing as they come ... so big, so rich, so smooth, it's hard to stop at just one glass. Or if it's a gathering, with a table full of rich and delicious food — just one bottle.
Given its superlative mouthfeel and finish, and given, as well, its critical acclaim — James Suckling awarded it 94 points — you might expect to pay double our best price of $36 a bottle. That just makes it, in our mind (and, we hope, in yours too!) a wine to stock up on by the case.
If you know your Barolos, then the producer will need no introduction: the great Damilano, one of the oldest wineries in that richly celebrated region — launched by Giuseppe Borgogno as a small family business in the late 19th century. Today, under the auspices of his grandchildren, Paolo, Mario, and Guido, it is a full-fledged operation, with a reputation known across the globe.
Lecinquevigne refers to the five great vineyards that are spread out across the Piedmont appellation (Brunate, Liste, Cerequio, Cannubi and Raviole), and from which the wine is made. This is enviable territory for the production of Nebbiolo, with complex, calcareous clay that often results in grapes of great concentration and fragrance. I should also note that these are old vines, ranging in age from 30 to 50 years.
On the nose, this is a dynamically aromatic Barolo, bursting forth from the glass with leather and tobacco, but also rose petals and violet. On the palate, the wine opens up into hints of cedar and spice, all carried along by wave after wave of satin smoothness.
In his 94-point rave, Suckling hailed its "firm, fine tannins that are integrated with a flavorful finish," and twice reached for the word "juicy."
He's not wrong. This is the kind of wine that compels you to take another taste, and another, and another, just to be able to savor the experience all over again.
We'd suggest cellaring it for another year — for maximum rewards — but it's ready to go right now, and will be a welcome partner for roasted game meats, braised beef, anything with roasted mushrooms, or any cheese board you can put together.
Versatility, approachability, drinkability ... This is one to buy by the case, and we hope you'll take advantage of special Concierge Family pricing to stock your cellar for the great times ahead!
