The Story: These limited releases are hand-selected from The Dalmore's finest casks — chosen, every November, by the whisky makers after a comprehensive review of every cask in the distillery’s historic sandstone warehouse — and we recently secured a small allocation: just 50 cases of the Select Edition 2006 and just 150 cases of the Select Edition 2009.
Specs: The Dalmore's master distiller, Gregg Glass, has matured these whiskies in American white oak ex-bourbon casks before transferring each expression into hand-selected Matusalem sherry casks. The 2009 was then finished in 10YO Tawny port pipes & the 2006 finished in Amoroso sherry casks.
Our Tasting Notes: The 2024 Vintage Collection theme is: Rich Desserts. And the folks at Dalmore certainly hit the nail on the head with this theme. The 2006 Select Edition beckons with notes of Sherry-soaked raisins, roasted figs, cedar wood, and a hint of honey. On the palate, it unfolds layers of dark fruit intertwined with liquorice and cacao, gradually revealing the elegant complexity of bergamot and blood orange. The finish is long and memorable, with antique Sherry notes lingering on the palate, expressing a rich medley of berries, liquorice, cassia bark, and dark chocolate. The 2009 Select Edition opens with a captivating aroma, with whispers of Manuka honey, dark plum, and cracked black pepper, accompanied by delicate hints of clove. On the palate, it reveals a harmonious blend of Morello cherries and dates, elevated by the vibrant zest of candied Seville orange, fresh figs, and a subtle touch of light cacao. The finish is exceptionally rich, featuring deep plum notes that meld seamlessly with the warmth of moist ginger cake, the nuttiness of roast chestnut, and a gentle hint of soft wood spice, ensuring a memorably rich and dessert-like conclusion.
ABV: Select Edition 2006, 47.2%; Select Edition 2009, 48.9%. Non-chill filtered, with no colors or additives.
Fun Fact: Gregg Glass and the Whisky Making Team at The Dalmore have determined that November is the best time of year to assess casks because it’s when the maturing whisky decides to wake up and reveal its truth depth.
