THE DALMORE LIMITED EDITION LUMINARY SERIES 2024

16 YEAR OLD SINGLE MALT SCOTCH WHISKY

HIGHLANDS, SCOTLAND

Why Buy: The Dalmore needs no introduction, of course, but what continues to amaze us about this legacy brand is how, at a time when it could simply rest on its laurels, it keeps coming up with so many extraordinary, mind-expanding expressions. Case in point: the 2024 edition of The Dalmore Luminary No. 2, a 16 Year single malt matured in white oak ex-bourbon casks, finished in Graham’s Tawny Port pipes and Apostoles sherry casks, and, to gild the lily, given just the lightest touch of rare, peated Dalmore. Not just a must-have for your collection, this, folks, is one for the ages: a pinnacle statement of a single malt. Not to mention it is natural color, non-chill filtered, and bottled at a higher ABV.

The Team Behind It: We would go anywhere the dream team of Gregg Glass, The Dalmore’s award-winning Luminary whisky maker (who last year was awarded the honor of Master Distiller of the Year at the Icons of Whisky Scotland Awards) and Master Distiller Richard Paterson, considered by many to be the greatest whisky maker of his generation, wanted to take us. But even we were knocked out by the depth and dimension of this expression. Even the artistic design itself — crafted by Melodie Leung, the Director at Zaha Hadid Architects, one of the world's greatest firms — is a level beyond.

The History of the Distiller: The Dalmore opened for business in 1839, and one of the enduring hallmarks of this Highlands legend is that it never rushes the process, never cuts corners. This patience, coupled with Paterson's exquisitely sensitive palate, is the foundation for everything The Dalmore does, and the reason it produces some of the most sought-after whiskies in the world. Time and again, Paterson, Gregg Glass, and Co. have demonstrated their devotion to achieving perfection in the glass, and this glorious and distinguished release only burnishes that considerable reputation

Our Tasting Notes: What a gloriously vibrant and alive nose, bursting with aromas of crème brulee, antique leather, pomegranate, guava, and cherry blossom. The palate is no less alive, but darkens, calling forth notes of ripe figs, roasted coffee beans, fermented black limes, and brioche. It finishes with hints of dark cacao, mangoes, and, in the background, faint but unmistakable, a whiff of herbal wood smoke. This is a whisky that all but commands you to sip slowly and savor, as you linger over the influence of its long cask maturation and double-finishing, and revel in its weight and texture. A drink of uncommon sophistication

ABV: 48.6 (97.2 proof).

Fun Fact: If you've ever wondered about the significance of the stag emblem that adorns every bottle of The Dalmore, it alludes to a curious moment in Scottish history, when Colin of Kintail prevented King Alexander III from being killed by a stag.
