DAL FORNO ROMANO

VENETO, ITALY 2013

Amarone is easily one of the most distinctive styles produced today, and few other wines can achieve unbelievable opulence as precisely as a finely crafted Amarone. Legendary Italian producer Romano Dal Forno has perfected this art, and tops the short list of Italian wine icons. Robert Parker has famously referred to his wines as “the reference point for prodigious Valpolicella and Amarone” and vintage releases consistently garner perfect and near-perfect scores and rave reviews from critics and collectors. Romano ages his wines longer than most producers, and the 2013s were just released in 2019. The 2013 Amarone della Valpolicella is a masterpiece: enormously powerful and rich, but somehow still graceful and elegant—a delicate balance that is increasingly rare to experience. The 2013 Valpolicella Superiore is more akin to a second wine; the 2013 is complex and concentrated and offers a taste of Dal Forno expertise at remarkable value.

The Dal Forno family estate is located in Val D’Illasi, and the 65 acres of vineyards are planted to indigenous varietals Corvina, Corvinone, Rondinella, Oseleta, and Croatina. The estate vineyards sit around 1,000 feet in elevation and “the loose, alluvial soils, meticulous pruning and scrupulous viticultural techniques ensure remarkable-quality grapes” (Dal Forno Romano). The grapes for both the Amarone and Valpolicella Superiore are hand harvested and sorted, and the appassimento process for both wines is carried out naturally (and time-consumingly) without any artificial dehydration systems.

The Amarone is composed of 60% Corvina, 20% Rondinella, 10% Oseleta, and 10% Croatina and aged two years in 100% new oak, followed by three years maturation in bottle before release. Though the wine is 16% ABV (not uncommon for Amarone), it is impeccably balanced and the seamless layers of flavor are nearly endless. While typical Valpolicella wines do not go through the appassimento process, the grapes destined for Dal Forno's Valpolicella Superiore dry for around 45 days (the Amarone for 90 days); the wine boasts a richness akin to its Amarone big brother with the fresh red cherry fruit notes uplifting the palate and adding a beautiful freshness. These wines are absolutely built for the hedonists and showcase why Romano Dal Forno has become recognized as an unstoppable force within the Veneto.
