CVNE, PAGOS DE VIÑA REAL

RIOJA, SPAIN 2018

If you're a regular reader of these emails, then you know that we're mad for the great Tempranillos of Rioja.

At a time of skyrocketing prices for Bordeaux and Burgundy, they remain one of the enduring values in the world of wine, offering, as Forbes put it, both "incredible ageability" and tremendous character.

And some Tempranillos, like this extraordinary, single-vineyard, old-vine bottling from CVNE Pagos de Viña Real, manage to find another gear entirely, delivering a soulful and poetic essay on terroir. And bear in mind: only in years where the harvests are excellent, is a Pagos de Viña Real released, with grapes rigorously sourced from their best plots.

In a 95-point rave, Wine Enthusiast hailed it for its dark and complex nose ("aromas of cassis, anisette and mocha"), developed palate (a "mélange of cooling herb flavors, notably licorice, clove and eucalyptus, which make way for blackberry, black cherry and vanilla") and "opulent tannins."

Long before the late 20th century boom in Spanish wine, and, more specifically, the explosion of interest in the wines of Rioja, Viña Real was there. The label goes back a century, and it has built a passionate, world-wide following on more than mere high quality. Its wines offer something ineffable and profound: an exploration of the remarkable intricacies of the Rioja Alavesa.

In this case, that means their La Romera vineyard in the village of Labastida, at the foot of the Toloño Mountains – a plot of old vines planted four decades ago on clay and boulder soils.

Tempranillos are wines of great power, but the best also have a sneaky elegance. To maximize the expressive potential of the vintage, it was fermented in small vats with indigenous yeasts, and aged on the lees in French oak barrels.

If you compare the 2018 to previous vintages, you'll note straightaway that the 2018 was given a good deal less oak, revealing an almost fruit-forwardness that is striking and welcome in a Rioja, and only adds to the charm and elegance of the wine.

James Suckling, who also awarded it 95 points, set its drinking window for 2023, making now the perfect time to stock up on this deeply rewarding Rioja that, over the next 5-7 years, is only going to continue to soften and mature. But hurry; our quantities are limited!
