Specs: Made from 100% malted barley, it was distilled to no more than 66% ABV, and aged in new American oak casks.
The Story: You may not also know that Crown is a family operation, one committed to local products, a methodical process, and a minding of the details. The barley used for this bottling was sourced almost exclusively from Manitoba and nearby provinces, and is considered among the finest in the world for its hardiness and resilience. It took five different mash bills and twelve different distillation columns to produce the final product, which was aged in barrels at Crown's Valleyfield distillery, in Quebec. The team at Crown is extraordinarily proud of this one, and they should be.
Our Tasting Notes: On the nose, an aromatic burst of autumn, as the inviting notes of pie-baking fill your nostrils — crisp apples, cinnamon, allspice — followed by a wonderful secondary wave of cream and rich caramel. That secondary wave primes you for your first sip, as those notes of cream and caramel deepen and lengthen, and are joined by subtle tastes of almond, walnut, banana, and rye. The finish circles back to where you began, a delicate, warming touch of cinnamon that carries you home.
Recommended Use: In our tastings, we preferred it best neat, or with only a rock or two, the better to preserve its core strength and character.
ABV: 45% (90 proof).
Fun Fact: Crown Royal's origin story dates to 1939, when King George VI and Queen Elizabeth visited Canada and were gifted a whisky in a special velvet bag. The royals were so enamored of the present that when they left, they took 10 cases with them. And a legend was born.
