Why Buy: If you think of Crown Royal only as a mass-market brand, think again: this extra-rare, 30-year-aged whisky — the second release in the Royal Series, following on the heels of the stellar Crown Royal 29 Year Old — is the longest-aged blend in the label's history, and a tour de force of the distiller's craft: a premium whisky with the same depth and detailing you would expect to find in a smaller-batch independent.
The Story: Surely we don't have to tell you about Crown Royal, a name that for many of us harkens back to our first awareness of whisky, and, maybe, to our first exploratory (and illicit) sips. But this new release is not your father’s whisky, and if you haven’t kept up with the label over the last decade or so — in particular, its excellent Royal Series — it is bound to surprise you with its refinement and sophistication. Four-fifths of the grain that went into this ultra-aged, rare whisky (rye, corn, and barley) was sourced from Manitoba and surrounding provinces. To produce the final blend, Crown's distillers used five different mash bills and twelve different distillation columns, and aged the result in barrels at their historic LaSalle distillery.
Our Tasting Notes: A marvelously robust whisky, the kind you'll want to nurse over the course of a long, pleasurable night. On the nose, it leaps out at you first with its notes of ripe pear, baking spices, and maple, before giving way to hints of orchard fruit and vanilla. On the palate, this is a dram of great smoothness, with an almost seamless glide to the long, slow finish.
Serving Suggestion: In our tastings, we preferred it best neat, or with only a rock or two, the better to preserve its core strength and character.

Fun Fact: Crown Royal is located in a small town in Manitoba called Gimli, which in Norse means “home of the Gods.” It also happens to be the name of a fierce fighting dwarf in Tolkien's "The Lord of the Rings."
