COSSART GORDON

MADEIRA, PORTUGAL

Why Buy: Each of these extraordinary bottles serves up a stirring lesson, not just in history and legacy (although it's not every day you're offered the privilege of tasting a 48- or 45-year wine from one of the world's most iconic producers), but also in time and place: in the way that Cossart Gordon's passionate focus on estate vineyards allows for specific terroir expression character. As for the freshness and finesse on display in these deeply-aged, fortified wines? Simply incredible.

The Story: If all Cossart Gordon & Co. had going for it was its founding story, it would still be worthy of a chapter in the annals of the spirits trade. Established in 1745 by a pair of Scotsmen, Grancis Newton and William Gordon (the duo was later joined by William Cossart), it emerged to become one of the most beloved brands in colonial America, supplying case after case of its distinctively complex fortified wines to the men and women who laid the foundation for the nation to be. Nearly three centuries later, the world is a markedly different place, but the methods that elevated the company are not, nor is the commitment to showing the patience to producing Madeiras not just of extreme high quality, but also of eminent distinction. The company owns and manages its own vineyards in prime locations throughout Madeira, and works closely with local growers to supplement its production needs. It also ages its best lots for decades, yielding extremely mature Madeiras that are renowned for their depth, intensity, and finish.

Our Tasting Notes: These 5 are not just a showcase of the current portfolio — they're also, and perhaps more tellingly, an affirmation of all that Cossart Gordon has represented over the decades. The signature traits are all here, and in abundance: richness, acidity, and a deep nuttiness that makes for an intricate, layered profile, along with the structure necessary for long-aging the wines over decades. And in the three vintage expressions, we were struck, again and again in our tastings, with just how much energy and vitality they managed to retain after more than four decades in the bottle.

Fun Fact: Here's how vital and emblematic Madeira was to American life: it was used to toast the Declaration of Independence on July 4th, 1776.
