CODIGO 1530 CRISTALINO REPOSADO TEQUILA

JALISCO, MEXICO

Why Buy: Mind-blowing tequila. Código took its critically-acclaimed, ultra-premium Reposado, aged it in French white oak Cabernet wine barrels, then blended it with a prized 6-year “Origen” Extra Añejo finished in French Cognac casks. But that's not all. Their proprietary filtration process took everything up a notch. Standard charcoal filtration tends to erase the amber-colored, sometimes bitter tannins from barrel aging. Código's filtration keeps more in, revealing complex aromas and flavors that the vast majority of Cristalino's are missing. The result? A Cristalino unlike any other, layered and exquisite, and an affirmation of the growing legend of Código 1530.

What They're Saying: The BBC – not one, typically, to write about a spirit and a producer, much less heap praise upon one – opined: "It's hard to pick just one of the Código 1530 range for praise."

The Story: Código 1530 might be a relative upstart in the increasingly high-stakes world of tequila, but in a little over a decade this ultra-premium producer has emerged out of nowhere to join the very top-rank of tequila makers. Not unlike a pizzeria that adheres to the codes of the Associazione Verace Pizza Napoletana, Código has been steadfast in its commitment to “Los Códigos,” the codes and customs of production set forth in Jalisco in the early 16th century. For that reason, each bottle contains three times more blue Weber agave than is standard in the industry, and purity is the law of the land – the water source is rainwater "that's been filtered through volcanic rocks," according to the website Vinepair, and you won't find any chemicals, flavorings, or sweeteners in any bottling. The other cardinal virtue at Código is patience, with a pronounced emphasis, at the Amatitán, Jalisco, distillery, on maturation and resting. You can see and, more importantly, taste the rewards of this oaking and casking in every rich and resonant sip.

Our Tasting Notes: On the nose, you'll find intense hits of hazelnuts and roasted agave leaves, along with a rounding aroma of pure vanilla. The palate carries forth these notes, along with caramel, cocoa, and the rich, lightly smoky character of roasted nuts. It finishes smooth and clean, with the Extra Anejo giving it an unexpected undertow of depth and strength.

Recommendation: This is a tequila to drink neat, or on the rocks, in order to properly savor its nuances.

ABV: 40%.

Fun Fact: Código has been memorialized in song: country legend (and investor) George Strait sings its praises in a jaunty little tune he wrote, called ... wait for it ... Código. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LdS6c2e9IrQ)
