OUR TASTING NOTES:
What impressed us most of all here isn't just the complexity (many premium tequilas offer that) but the impressive integration. Initially, for instance, you’ll find yourself tracking the brown sugar sweetness as it mixes and mingles with cinnamon and clove, but then watch: a strong note of cacao emerges and, rather than taking over, unites with both. There’s never any jostling for attention here; each note arrives precisely when it should. And the mouthfeel: so luxuriously full and rich that you’re almost in Sauternes territory, with wonderfully subtle tobacco hints that carry you to the long, lingering finish of dried plum and caramelized walnut.
THE STORY:
While most distilleries measure aging in months, Clase Azul measures it in years — five of them, to be exact. But it's not just about duration; it's about what happens during those 1,825 days. The first transformation occurs in American whiskey casks, where the raw, vibrant spirit begins to soften and mature. But then comes the twist that separates the extraordinary from the merely excellent: the tequila is divided and transferred into three different types of sherry casks (amontillado, oloroso, and Pedro Ximénez). Each imparts its own distinct characteristics, creating what, in the world of cognitive scientists, might be called a "parallel processing" of flavor development. Anyone with enough money can build a fancy distillery, but having the patience to let complexity develop at exactly its own perfect pace — that, folks, is the all and the everything.
THE DECANTER:
Rendered in striking black ceramic, the decanter features Clase Azul's signature feathered motif hand-applied with platinum. To literally gild this lily, artisans at the distillery deftly add silver and 24-karat gold adornments. Each bottle takes weeks to complete, making it as individually unique as a fingerprint.
FUN FACT:
The platinum feather motif is completely invisible when applied, revealed only after the decanter’s been fired. The artisans, therefore, work entirely from memory and skill, unable to see their progress as they create these designs.
