CLASE AZUL DIA DE MUERTOS 2025 LIMITED EDITION

JALISCO, MEXICO

WHY BUY:
This is it, the final chapter in Clase Azul's five-year Nuestros Recuerdos series, and arguably the most thrilling — not to mention being among the most anticipated premium spirits releases of the year. Master Distiller Viridiana Tinoco has created the tequila equivalent of Phil Spector’s famed wall of sound, an intricate, multi-part harmony of premium tequilas aged 12 to 38 months in first-use American whiskey casks, with a portion of the agave cooked in pit ovens to provide a resounding depth. Add the ivory-colored decanter adorned with Mexican artist Erika Rivera's traditional ofrenda illustration, (and the handcrafted 24-karat gold locket medallion that opens to reveal reflective obsidian), and you have one of the most coveted (and beautiful) collectibles on the market.

OUR TASTING NOTES:
If the deep amber color hints at prolonged time in the barrel, the nose boldly declares it. You’ll want to take the time to really sit with these aromas, starting with whispers of cooked agave, then segueing into tones of smoked wood and orange peel, and finally giving way to notes of caramel and clove. The palate makes good on those aromatic promises, and impressed us, above all, in its seamless integration of fruit (principally, of orange marmalade) and spice (clove and cinnamon and pepper), and the pit-oven presence in the background, subtle but unmistakable, which imbues the tequila with real depth and layers that don’t reveal themselves right away but take their time unfolding. As for the finish, it’s a thing of beauty, and deserves a section all its own.

THE STORY:
Clase Azul's journey began in 1997, in Jalisco, Mexico, when founder Arturo Lomeli set out to redefine premium tequila. Lomeli didn’t just set his sights on creating a superior spirit; what animated him was elevating tequila to a kind of art form, and showcasing the rich cultural heritage of Mexico. Each bottle he has released has been a stirring testament to this philosophy, from the meticulous selection of agave to the time-honored distillation process. But Clase Azul's true magic lies in its aging expertise. They've mastered the delicate balance of allowing the tequila to mature without overpowering the essential agave character. The Día de Muertos release takes this craft to the next level. It's a celebration of life, memory, and the cyclical nature of existence — themes deeply woven into Mexican culture — and has earned the brand a devoted and passionate following among connoisseurs and celebrities alike. Each bottle is hand-crafted and hand-painted by artisans in Mexico, taking up to two weeks to complete. More than vessels that hold a precious liquid, they're works of art that tell a story of cultural pride and artisanal craftsmanship.

THE BOTTLE:
The ivory-colored decanter features artwork by Australian-based Mexican artist Erika Rivera, while the 24-karat gold locket medallion contains reflective obsidian and intricate milagritos. The locket was crafted by the Milagros de Latón workshop in Tesistán, Jalisco; each piece requires more than 50 steps and up to 12 hours of daily work.

FUN FACT:
The obsidian cameo in each locket medallion is meant to call to mind the Mexican tradition of placing mirrors on Day of the Dead ofrendas so that departed souls are able to recognize themselves when they return to the land of the living.
