When it comes to distinction, singularity and exceptional flavor, aged spirits have set the bar in the worldwide craft spirits revolution, propelling demand to record-breaking levels among both practiced aficionados as well as casual enthusiasts. Driving the appeal for these remarkable expressions, whether it is a whisky, tequila or rum, is the unprecedented attention to detail: quality of grain or fruit, selection of barrels, time allowed for maturity, and, most importantly, the rigorous standards applied by the maker to pare down to the best of the best.

Well, you can now add a vodka to the revolution. Hailing from global icon Chopin, the world’s first ultra-luxury vodka producer established in 1896, we have the honor of introducing the first-ever, limited release Family Reserve – an estate grown and produced bottling that is set to become a benchmark not only for vodka, but for all of spirits. This is truly one of the most exciting and innovative things to happen in the clear spirits space.

From a distillery dating back to the 18th century in the beautiful countryside of a medieval hamlet in eastern Poland, the heart and soul of Chopin is its priceless copper column still that has given life to spectacular spirits for 125 years, grounding it completely in tradition. Using estate-grown, carefully selected varieties of potatoes and grains from their rich, dark soils, Chopin has easily vaulted to the upper echelon of premium vodka, upending the idea that vodka is just a neutral spirit and becoming an icon in the spirits world. Yet owner Tad Dorda was not satisfied, wanting to take Chopin to even greater heights and keep pace with the global trend for quality-crafted, singular expressions.

Working with Master Distiller Waldemar Durakiewicz, Dorda sought out an exceptional variety of potato for over a decade. In 2016, they found one. After harvesting the potatoes in the peak of summer when they were still young and their skins ever so tender, just pure water and yeast were added before being distilled four times in their copper still. Young potatoes are characterized by their low starch content and sweeter flavors, taking nearly four times the amount of potatoes to produce the same amount of spirit. Resting in fifty-year-old oak casks for two years, the vodka mellowed while maintaining its full flavor before being bottled by hand – with 25 pounds of potatoes going into every single bottle.
Whereas most vodkas are made to be pristine and clean, this is without a doubt the most flavorful vodka I have ever tasted. Although not a brown spirit, the experience of sipping this neat or on the rocks is much closer to a Scotch or fine tequila than a vodka, and can take any cocktail, even the classic martini, to the next level. With spice on the nose, the vodka is refined and complex, full and round on the palate balanced by flavors of licorice and earthy sweetness. This will stand out on anyone’s bar – if you can get your hands on one. With such a limited production, each bottle will be snapped up when they come to market. Luckily for us, with the Family Reserve not set to make its global debut for another month, we got ahead of everyone else before it becomes too hard to find and secured an allocation of 50 six-packs directly from the estate. As a first to market, we are able to offer the Chopin Family Reserve at a Concierge Sales price, with each bottle coming in its own special, luxurious case. Don’t hesitate on this one, as this is a collectible like no other.
