CHÂTEAU TROPLONG MONDOT, SAINT-ÉMILION GRAND CRU CLASSÉ

BORDEAUX, FRANCE 2017

Château Troplong Mondot has built a reputation for boldly structured and concentrated wines, and the 2017 vintage easily lives up to expectation. This is the first vintage crafted under the new leadership of Aymeric de Gironde, formerly of Saint Estèphe’s Cos d’Estournel, and consulting winemaker Thomas Duclos, who also consults at Château Canon. Decanter reports, “Aymeric is taking what had already begun under Xavier Parrente to the next level. This is one of the few wines to really make your heart race in 2017, with its blueberry and cool, black fruit notes with zippy minerality and a juicy, slightly saline finish. There is plenty of power, but it's contained, and the fruit is almost surprising in its purity and direction—it makes everyone around the table start talking.” Hands down one of the top examples from 2017, this vintage of Troplong Mondot is a must-have for fans of Saint-Émilion.

With a history dating back to the 1700s, Troplong Mondot has seen a series of owners who have all left their marks on the estate. The 1989 vintage seemed to usher in a new wave for the storied château, and Troplong Mondot has been nearly unstoppable since with its series of truly excellent wines—happily, the trend looks that it will continue with Aymeric now at the helm of the ship. Formerly the general manager at Cos d’Estournel, Aymeric took over when Xavier Pariente left the estate in 2017; given his impressive resume—which has included time with the LVMH group as well as AXA Millésimes, whose umbrella includes Pichon Baron, Petit Village, and Suduiraut—collectors have been anxiously awaiting this debut release.

2017 was a warm and dry growing season and de Gironde arrived just in time to “work his magic on the vinification” and the bottled wine is expansive, lush, and simply spectacular (Wine Advocate). The 2017 Troplong Mondot has the characteristic power we’ve come to expect from the estate; however, earlier picking, blending before barrel aging (speaking to Aymeric's left bank experience), and a somewhat more hands-off approach in the cellar has produced an incredibly energetic and finessed wine that will reward for many years to come.
