If you think “value Pomerol'' is a contradiction in terms, you’re probably not alone. Famed Pomerol châteaux like Petrus, Lafleur, and Le Pin easily command thousands of dollars per bottle and estates like La Conseillante and l’Evangile boast prices in the triple digits. While these big names are typically first to mind, the appellation is home to some 135 producers and value does indeed exist if you know where to look. Recently named one of Decanter’s “most improved Pomerol châteaux,” Château Rouget has been building its reputation for bold, character-driven wines that overdeliver their surprisingly affordable prices. Internationally acclaimed consulting oenologist Michel Rolland has continued this trend with the 2015 vintage: it’s a concentrated, luscious wine from an estate that has flown somewhat under the radar—but as the wines continue demonstrating their aging potential and garnering critic praise, we predict they won’t stay under the radar for much longer.

In 1992, the Labruyère family—who also own estates in Burgundy, Champagne, and Beaujolais—fell in love with Château Rouget; driven by the remarkable potential of its terroir, they decided to purchase the estate and reinvent it as a key player within the Pomerol appellation. Today the property encompasses nearly 45 acres of Merlot and Cabernet Franc vines averaging around 40 years old. Pomerol is not a large appellation, and many of the vineyard holdings brush shoulders with heavyweights like Eglise-Clinet, Petrus, and Le Gay. To uphold the integrity and quality of the finished wine, grapes are always handpicked and sorted and each parcel is vinified separately.

The significant investments in the vineyard and winery that the family has made throughout the years have not been in vain—the progress has been apparent vintage after vintage, and 2015 is one of the best to date. 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc, it’s a full-bodied, powerful expression that’s easy to love with its flavors of ripe blackberry, mocha, and leather and a spicy, earth-driven finish. The wine is entering its drinking window, but has the staying power for at least another 5-10 years. You won’t want to miss this pristine example from one of Pomerol's fastest rising stars.
