Pontet-Canet may very well be the hottest estate in Bordeaux right now, and from the evidence of recent years, they are more than just an image, they are an icon. Far surpassing their fifth growth status, they have joined the ranks of the non-first growth elite, alongside Ducru-Beaucaillou, Cos d’Estournel and Palmer. From an estate that was once referred to as merely ‘competent’ by Robert Parker in 1975, to their highly sought-after vintages of today, it seems that Alfred Tesseron is doing everything right and their quality (and prices) continue to rise.

With vineyards next to those of first growth Mouton-Rothschild, Pontet-Canet’s potential for greatness was always there – and we’ve seen that potential flourish under the leadership of Alfred Tesseron. His commitment to converting the vineyard to 100% biodynamic has put the estate at the forefront of the industry in Bordeaux (a place that typically was never thought to be able to farm biodynamically due to the humid Atlantic climate). With the quality of wine now being produced, Pontet-Canet is certainly seeing a return on its investment. With other Chateaux following suit in moving towards biodynamics, including Latour, Rauzan-Segla, Smith-Haut Lafitte and Palmer to name a few, Pontet-Canet has unquestionably changed the face of Bordeaux today.

With their 2010 coming in as one of the best-selling Bordeaux wines of the vintage, it’s hard to imagine they could produce something to top them all.
