Jeb Dunnuck called the 2016 “the finest vintage I've ever tasted from this estate,” a wine that moves across the palate “with flawless purity and balance.” Vinous found the 2023 “striking in its beauty,” concluding, with an air of finality: “There is no other wine like Palmer in Bordeaux.” Suckling opened his review of the 2015 vintage with “I am breathless,” and was carried away by the 2022 vintage, a wine so “compacted and dense yet weightless.”
Our own tasting was less about assessing the relative strengths and weaknesses than about allowing the wines to work their profound magic. The 2016 is stately and almost noble, a broad-shouldered but deeply nuanced wine with a finish that lingered long after the tasting was over. In his review of the 2015, Suckling set the opening date for 2022; it’s now 4 years past that, and showing gorgeously, with notes of black raspberry, plum, and violets, and, in the background, but unmistakable, a resonant curl of smoke. A beautiful and powerful wine, and destined to last for years and years. The 2023 is already showing the Palmer perfume, and it impressed us with its depth and dimensionality. The 2022 might have just missed a perfect score, but to us it keeps company with all of the above: a wine of structure, suppleness and spice that's destined to last two decades or more.

Nominally a Third Growth in the 1855 classification, Palmer has been making exceptional wine for more than a century and a half, and, along the way, proving the doubters wrong. Even today it regularly goes head-to-head with (and sometimes outperforms) many First Growths. And its move to full biodynamic farming, in 2017, has coincided, not accidentally, with some of the most glorious vintages in its storied history.
