CHÂTEAU MONTROSE, SAINT ESTÉPHE

BORDEAUX, FRANCE

“A perfect wine.”

That’s Jeb Dunnuck on the 2018 Château Montrose, predicting, in a 100-point rave, that it will “evolve into a modern-day legend” in just 5-6 years.

We couldn’t be more thrilled to have secured an allocation of this perfect wine for you, and at a not inconsiderable discount.

Longtime readers of this email know that Montrose is one of our favorites — a legendary Super Second estate often referred to as the Latour of Saint-Estèphe, whose powerful, elegant wines you might swear, in a brown-bag test, were First Growth.

In many ways, the brilliance of this 2018 has its roots in 2012, when Montrose's owners brought in directors Jean-Bernard Delmas from Haut-Brion and Hervé Berland from Mouton-Rothschild, sending a clear signal to the wine world that Montrose was determined to be considered alongside Bordeaux's First Growth elite.

The ’18 affirms it.

Berland has noted that the”incredible” potential of the ’18 announced itself early, with the first tastings showing “the signs of a very great vintage, a subtle combination of the fruity aromatic profile of the 2009 and the precision of the 2016."

The result — a blend of 72% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot, 6% Cabernet Franc, and 2% Petit Verdot, and raised in 60% new French oak — is nearly exactly what Berland predicted early in the process.

Here's Dunnuck: "Boasting a deep purple hue as well as awesome levels of crème de cassis and smoky blackberry fruits and notes of tobacco, lead pencil, scorched earth, and chocolate, it's deep, opulent, and incredibly concentrated on the palate, with no shortage of mid-palate depth, tannins, or length.”

We also were able to procure an allocation of Montrose's '17, which Wine Advocate awarded 98 points, calling it “incredibly classy, poised, and sophisticated,” with “fantastic intensity… super-ripe, finely-grained tannins and tons of freshness to lift and show-off a stunning array of gorgeous black fruit and fragrant sparks.”

As a bonus — and to give you something great to open and enjoy right now while you wait for the others to age — we also have their La Dame, a second wine that James Suckling, in a 94 point review, called “very refined,’ with a “full body and … round, juicy texture. Delicious already.

We have secured as much as we could of these beauties, but special occasion Bordeaux doesn't stick around for long around here — especially not with scores like this, or at deep discounts like this.

So act fast!
