The Story: As many observers have noted, 2020 proved to be a challenging vintage for many winemakers in Bordeaux, with a sodden spring giving way to a dry, hot summer. But, as always, terroir matters. Old vines matter. And the finest estates, blessed by superior winemaking talent and cutting-edge technologies, surmounted the obstacles to produce wines that can stand alongside the noble pantheon of Bordeaux's best. It was no accident that Lynch-Bages would be among these. Under the direction of legendary proprietor Jean-Charles Cazes and winemaker Nicolas Labenne, the estate has been on a phenomenal run this century, and this bottling is a testament to the exactitude and passion that has been a hallmark of the operation.
Specs: The 2020 vintage is built, primarily, on Cabernet Sauvignon, with Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot providing rounding, dimensionality, and softness. It aged for approximately 18 months in French oak barriques.
Our Tasting Notes: We love the enormous power, density, heft, but even more the liveliness and energy that rise nearly to the level of bravado, as Pauillac at its best often does. By no means are these the only signal qualities. We reveled, as well, in its definition and focus, its juiciness and acidity, its mouth-filling richness and supernal softness. Outstanding.
