CHATEAU LES CARMES HAUT-BRION ELEMENTS

In Bordeaux, perhaps no estate has been on a greater trajectory over the past decade than Château Les Carmes Haut-Brion.

Today, via the Elements project and the separate 2019 and 2020 vintages, we bring you several opportunities to experience the pleasures of this excellent estate. For the Elements, fewer than 1,000 cases were made across all formats, all bottles have been waxed directly at the property and covered with a tracing paper case to protect the original label. The word "oenothèque," imposed on the protective tracing paper, is also an extra guarantee of the wine’s provenance in Château Les Carmes Haut-Brion’s cellars.

Since 2010, when Patrice Pichet, a real estate mogul and wine enthusiast, purchased the property and set it on a dramatically ambitious course, the winemaking has taken a stunning leap forward. Together with winemaker Guillaume Pouthier, whose work in the Rhône had garnered wide renown, Pichet tripled the size of the vineyards (from 10 hectares to 30) and commissioned Philippe Starck to design the winemaking facility, but in every other respect the aim has been to downsize, converting the operation to older, more laborious methods of production. Harvesting is done only by hand, horses are gradually phasing out tractors, and pumpovers are not permitted. The terroir of Bordeaux, made up of Gunz gravel, sand, and clay, is inarguably vital to the consistently high quality of the final product, but so is Pouthier's insistence on allowing stems into the winemaking.
