One of Bordeaux’s renowned “super seconds,” Chateau Leoville Las Cases is one of the most iconic and collectible wines in the world. With the heart of the estate’s vineyards adjacent to First Growth Chateau Latour, separated only by the tributary “Juillac,” this Saint-Julien property produces some of the most powerful and classically styled wines in the entire region. This heralded estate, whose parcels helped make up the original Second Growth that included Leoville Barton and Leoville Poyferre, is one of the oldest in the Medoc, belonging to some of the wealthiest and most influential noble French families prior to the French Revolution. Now in the hands of the Delon family, owners since the late 19th century, the consistency in quality from vintage to vintage is extraordinary, with the best Bordeaux vintages producing even more exquisite and cellar-worthy wines. As the Chateau has held back and aged their Grand Vin from some of the best vintages over the last several decades, we were lucky enough to acquire 50 cases of the prestigious 2009 vintage directly from the estate. Consisting of vines averaging 40 years old, the property is planted mostly to Cabernet Sauvignon, followed by Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. In fact, many of their Cabernet Franc vines are some of the oldest on the estate, going back as much as 90 years. The proximity of the Gironde River has created a wide diversity of soils, including gravel and clay, helping to create an incomparable terroir that produces complexity and distinction in their wines. Gorgeously layered, with terrific depth and intensity, the 2009 is polished yet can easily age for another several decades. Amassing high praise and accolades since its release, the 2009 was re-reviewed this year by Wine Advocate, marking its 10-year anniversary, and was awarded a near-perfect 99-point score.
